Set in France, two murders a decade apart intertwine for an intriguing mystery. The fall from the cliff, was it an accident and did the bystander play a role? The contrasting investigations provide for a most enjoyable read for mystery and crime lovers. Highly recommended three and a half stars.

I finished this book- sat thinking for ages and I’m still baffled as to who did what to who and why. After a promising start, the storyline went from the ridiculous to the downright daft. There were far too many characters and twists to determine what was actually happening. To try and précis the plot here would take too much time and I wouldn’t be certain of it being correct. I did wonder whether the author was hallucinating at the time of writing. I felt as though I was. As another review has mentioned- I had to go back through the pages to clarify. Gave that up in the end as every chapter was a conundrum. To top all this weirdness off-the ending was awful.
I’ve been an admirer of this author’s books.....until this one.

A story that will linger in one's memory

This story begins with the discovery of three buried bodies that had been exposed because of a landslide. An investigation was launched to inquire who they were and what caused their deaths. Meanwhile, the author shifts to the main story that began in June 2014. A one-legged Arab Paralympian named Jamal Salaoui went for his early morning run. A run that, within a couple of days was to change all his hopes and plans, and cast into a nightmare that he could neither believe not imagine. He became one of three witnesses to the death of a young girl.

The unique role Jamal had, was not like Denise or Le Medef, the other two witnesses. Jamal became the chief suspect, not only of killing the girl, but also of raping her. The story develops at a pace that leaves the reader little time to catch his breath. The story, though easy to follow, is filled with puzzles at every turn.

Jamal thought the girl had committed suicide, but there was evidence that she was murdered. But how? Jamal saw he fall to her death – she leapt to her death. Various characters, some living, some dead, slowly make their appearances. These include Inspector Piroz who was investigating the girl’s death, and Mona Salinas, a researcher who befriended Jamal when they met at the police station. Were they friends or enemies, or innocents just like Jamal? The reader will not know until he has reached the end of the book – a book that compels the reader to go on reading long into the night.

Good thriller full of twists and turns

Top draw storyline with twists throughout and a triple twist at the end. The book is well researched and enjoyable to read although written in French origiinally translates well although it retains its French core
Jamal, a one legged arab youth witnesses a suicide, or does he? What is the realationship with two murders previously committed in a similar fashion and 3 skeletons found after a landslide?. Is Jamal an innocent witness or a serial killer?
The reader is lead down one path then another but its all nicely tied up at the end
The author creats empathy for Jamal and his predicament and a feeling for small coastal villages of Normandy where the story takes place. An excellent atmospheric thriller

A promising mystery slowly evolves into a plot as complex as an Einstein theory then collapses into a Perils of Pauline risible ending. The twists were so many and so absurd that I gave up. What started as fun ended as plain silly and beyond all belief.

A complex tale and it’s denouement entertains. I would strike comparison with an Agatha Christie style. I didn’t predict the solution and I would challenge anyone to do so. Nonetheless it was thoroughly explained. Thought i’d finished it a couple of times only for another “twist” to emerge.
