You never knew when you got hit or when you hit someone.
Everyone ran around wildly mashing the trigger until the
time ran out and when it was over, we all looked at each
other like, "What just happened?"
So when my son asked me to take him to play laser tag, I
was NOT enthusiastic.
When I saw these guns, I thought it would be a chance for
me to get out of playing laser tag, give my son something to
do over the summer with friends, and when he realized what
a crapfest it is, he'd at least have a couple of flashing
guns to play with.
The package came. I ripped into it. I installed the
batteries. The gun lit up, made all kinds of cool robo-noises,
and said, "Good luck!". I said, "Hey, even if these don't work,
these guns are awesome!"
I shot at my son with the laser gun. His red bulb immediately
flashed and made a noise indicating a hit.
Long story short: They actually work!
You shoot at someone, the gun recognizes it and indicates that
they were hit. You can set it to a game of 10 hits or 25. Once
you get hit 10 or 25 times, depending on your game, your gun
stops working for that game. Too cool!
It has lots of other cool features, including:
* Indoor/Outdoor Settings
* Shield - You can't tag anyone and no one can tag you, but you only
get a few seconds of shield time per game.
* Team Mode - Set it to Solo, Team 1, or Team 2.
* Ammo Indicator - Lets you know when you're getting low on ammo.
* Strength Indicator - Lets you know how much you've been hit.
It's been a LONG time since I was actually blown away by how much
better quality a toy was than I was expecting.
All my son's friends asked where I bought them and are in love
with them, and it gives them something else to do outside.
They feel extremely durable and I think they'll last a long time.
Location -- Outdoor (New England); Indoors
Max Distance attempted -- 75 meters (+or-)
Average Distance -- 25 to 50 meters
Game types -- Capture the flag; team defense; building searches/hide and seek; free for all
Cool random things -- Sights are relatively accurate and necessary for range shots. Warns you at low life.
I'm post-graduate aged with a degree in Criminal Justice. I've trained with the military and law enforcement.
This was actually a great product. I was a bit hesitant with the receiver being on the gun not vest. I guess I was a bit "old school" in my thinking.
I'm post college and bought two of these. The only bummer is that there are only 2 per box, who plays laser tag with only two people anyway?
I spend a lot of time with my friend who has a 13 year old, sporty, outdoor, kind of kid. We've used them with four people both inside and outside. The range is shockingly high for what I was expecting, about 50meters or more-- be warned you actually have to AIM at this range. The sights do actually work, and are necessary for ranged shots.
The audio on the guns seems loud to you, but it's actually pretty quiet. I've used it hiding, stalking my opponents in the woods and taken sniper shots at them, and they never heard my gun. Most of the use I've had for it is outside in the yard and woods.
The display lights are bright, which is handy to double as a flash light if you are hiding inside in the dark and need to see, but very annoying at pointing out where you are if you intend to hide and not shoot on sight.
Shield feature is handy. I only use it for making mad dashes to cover or attacking a well guarded spot. The time limit on it is great for preventing "campers."
Just don't tell kids who are young or inclined to cheat where the receiver is, it's small enough to cover with your hand.
We have decided that we need at least another 4 guns for parties and such but this is a great intro to laser tag system. It is very affordable, works with multiple guns, durable, and kids and adults seem, to have lots of fun. A note about the "Laser"...it's not a laser, it's really a infrared light if I remember correctly. One of the reviews on here actually has a video of these guns so that you know your kids aren't going to blind someone with the guns :)
If you are a serious laser tagger then yes, these guns are probably not what you're looking for but for a family who just wants an easy tag system to have some fun with this is it! Affordable, durable, and fun! Those were my requirements! Remember the batteries though! Each gun takes 6 AA's! I forgot them and we only had enough for 2 of the guns on Christmas morning...the boys were so sad...anyway, hope this helps with some decisions!
