This third offering from Peter Robinson is another enjoyable episode in the Inspector Banks series.
As with the previous two I have read, it is impossible to predict the conclusion. An added bonus is the beautifully descriptive narrative that carries us through the towns and cities of northern England.

I have been reading this series in order and intend to continue. It is interesting to see the characters and relationships develop and the storylines keep one's attention. Descriptions of the Yorkshire countryside win me over too. The only downside is all that cigarette smoke wafting through the tales. Please knock the habit DCI Banks; we don't want to witness your premature departure.

Enjoyable reading

Of the Bank's novels thus far, for me, this is the least interesting.
The bullish detective from the met, Burgess, is told to lead the investigation into the death of a police officer. The implications are political?
Banks engages with Burgess over many pub lunches in an effort to solve the crime. Banks has doubts over Burgess' s conduct as his superior officer. Banks feelings for another woman are also of concern. However, Banks persistent efforts finally come up with the truth. A few red herrings throughout make for enjoyable reading.

Jolly good

This is a pleasantly-paced detective story which I would recommend to anyone wanting to read such a thing. What has really thrown me is how much the world has changed in the thirty years since it was published (I read it for the first time not that long after). Banks smokes almost constantly and sometimes drinks sherry! His colleague drinks Double Diamond beer and smokes little cigars.
I like that Banks visits Halifax during the course of the investigation but it's when his superior busts goes round hitting random people he just doesn't like the look of.

A Well Crafted Early DCI Banks Novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 May 2020Verified Purchase
A DCI Banks murder mystery very much rooted in the late 1980s, with the world very much seen through his eyes. There are frequest reminders of his taste in music, real ale, pubs, smoking, and coping with cooking while his wife and children are away from home visiting relatives.
As you read, you learn a lot about Banks as a person, his views, attitudes and politics. He is surrounded by characters with varying flaws and abilities, all of whom he reflects upon throughout.
In ‘A Necessary End’ you get a real feel for the times in which the story is set, which almost makes it an historical thriller, although it was almost contemporary when it was written.
There are many twists and turns before Banks finally solves the killing of a brutal police officer at an anti-nuclear protest rally. An interesting read. It kept my attention to the end.

Good, but not the best!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 November 2018Verified Purchase
I did enjoy this book but thought it dragged on a little bit. I have read quite a few of the series now, not in the correct order, so maybe the later books are better written? A police officer is stabbed at a demonstration and there is no shortage of suspects. An officer from London is sent to Yorkshire to take control of the investigation and he is happy to pin the blame on anyone so he can return home but Banks is having none of it and makes sure the investigation is handled properly. Lots of twists and turns with some surprises along the way.

My Least Favourite So Far
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2018Verified Purchase
I have just finished reading book 5, Past Reason Hated, and A Necessary End has been so far my least favourite. I thought the story a tad on the boring side and I just could not connect with any of the new characters. I also found the found the character of "Dirty Dick Burgess" ridiculous. Wish I could give more stars but not for this book.
