An enjoyable read but it lacked the depthReviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2015
I would perhaps have given this book 4 stars if it wasn't for the fact that Daeninckx's other two novels (in English) are so much better than this one. This was an enjoyable read but it lacked the depth of his other book and I can't help feeling he's got better works that ought to have been translated above this one.
Left Bank PIReviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2014
Amusing, engaging, and nicely translated. A novel Gallic twist on the traditional crime thriller. Fun characters and evocative writing.
It is a novel embedded in history- but not the "official" and comfortable history that all countries and nationalities embraceReviewed in Canada on 12 November 2014
"Nazis in the Metro" is a very special book by a very special writer. It is a novel embedded in history- but not the "official" and comfortable history that all countries and nationalities embrace. Written in spare, lean prose without the hyperbole that drags down too many books in the detective genre, it is a stunning piece of work by a writer and social historian who deserves to be heard.
Interesting and captivatingReviewed in the United States on 30 July 2017
Didier Daeninckx is new to me and I love stories based on historical events and such. This was my first novel from a French writer on a topic I know very little which made it interesting. I read up on the historical aspects for context. His style of writing is smooth and easy to read. I love the Detective, he is a fascinating character. He is relentless for justice, social justice. It was relevant when it was written and relevant now 20 years later.
