Russia, 1917 - a country shrouded in secrecy, ruled by a charismatic but flawed Tsar, who is out of touch with the needs of his people. Natalie Tereshchenko works as a lady in waiting in the household of the royal family, but discovers that she is a niece of the Tsar himself, related to Queen Victoria and Catherine the Great. By the time she finds out, it is best kept a secret. As the monarchy collapses, and the country descends into civil war, the Tsar and his family are sent into exile, and young Natalie must accompany them. She tells her story as though chatting to a friend, revealing her daily life, her insecurities and longings, her friendships and fears, the men who loved her and deceived her. Sure that they will all be killed, Natalie looks for meaning in her life before it ends, a life filled with tension, drama, love, hate and revenge. When the family is slaughtered, she tries to flee, but she cannot escape her past, and the day comes when she must make an agonizing decision.

Many twists and turns in a good read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 April 2017Verified Purchase
An engaging read I reckon, and well written with a good pace to the story. The author has written this fascinating tale completely from the point of view of the lead lady, Natalie herself, with much of the story told in the present tense. This is not easy to do, so much credit for that, but there are times when the tense slips from the present to the past. There aren't too many of these, but just enough to be a little irritating. That's a fairly minor criticism, but one I feel worthy of mention. There are also a couple of dozen minor grammatical errors, but these didn't detract from what is essentially a very well written book. Overall I enjoyed this historical tale very much, and will read the follow up with eager anticipation.
