When Bernard Fitzpatrick drowns in a river close to his home, the village mourns a tragic accident… and amateur sleuth Eve Mallow is on the case.
Obituary writer Eve is looking forward to her new assignment, as well as spending a few days in the sweet little village of Saxford St Peter, walking the country lanes with her beloved dachshund Gus. But it turns out that it’s Bernard’s death that she’ll need to investigate, not his life. On the day she arrives, news breaks that the world-famous cellist was the victim of a grisly murder. Could this quaint English village be hiding a dark secret?
As Eve starts to interview Bernard’s friends and colleagues, she finds that he’d ruffled more than a few feathers. In fact, from the landlords of the Cross Keys Inn to his own seemingly devoted secretary, there’s barely a person in town who doesn’t have some reason to hate him… is one of the friendly villagers really a cold-blooded killer?
Eve hoped Saxford St Peter would be the perfect escape from her busy city life. But there is darkness even in the most sunlit of settings. And when a second body is found, Eve realises she's spoken to every single suspect. Her notebook contains all the clues she needs. But will she be able to crack the case and identify them… before they realise she’s on their trail and make her their next target?
An unputdownable page-turner, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Agatha Christie and Betty Rowlands.

About the author

Clare Chase writes classic mysteries. Her aim is to take readers away from it all via some armchair sleuthing in atmospheric locations.
Her debut novel was shortlisted for Novelicious’s Undiscovered Award, as well as an EPIC award post-publication, and was chosen as a Debut of the Month by LoveReading. Murder on the Marshes (Tara Thorpe 1) was shortlisted for an International Thriller Writers award.
Like her heroines, Clare is fascinated by people and what makes them tick. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked in settings as diverse as Littlehey Prison and the University of Cambridge, in her home city. She’s lived everywhere from the house of a lord to a slug-infested flat and finds the mid-terrace she currently occupies a good happy medium.
As well as writing, Clare loves family time, art and architecture, cooking, and of course, reading other people’s books.

The story at times, was a little tedious, with maybe a little too much attention to detail
Clare has crafted a plot that sees obituary writer Eve Mallow head to the village of Saxford St Peter to tell the life story of famed musician Bernard Fitzpatrick after his death. It appears to be straightforward, but when she arrives, the town is abuzz with the news that the cause of death of Bernard Fitzpatrick was not of natural causes but was indeed murder! As Eve learns more about Bernard and the villager’s dislike of him, it soon becomes apparent that one of the townsfolk may have something to do with his murder.
I really enjoyed the character of Eve Mallow. It was nice to read a story where the main protagonist did not have anything to do with the police. Don’t get me wrong, I love police procedurals, but this was a refreshing change. I look forward to reading more of her in future books. Being the fanatical dog lover that I am, it goes without saying that Gus stole my heart and was the perfect companion for Eve. The secondary characters that are made up of the villagers were all extremely well written and brought the town to life beautifully.
I love the ease of Clare’s writing style. I found it to be engaging, emotive and descriptive which for me was perfect as Clare laid the foundation for this new series. Mystery on Hidden Lane is a great cozy mystery with some fantastic twists that are all wrapped up in a satisfying conclusion.
It was an absolute pleasure to be able to read and review Mystery on Hidden Lane which I highly recommend and is definitely a contender for my best books of 2020 (If all you authors keep delivering such amazing material this year, my top 20 is going to look a lot more like a top 100!).
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Clare Chase for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Mystery on Hidden Lane, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Her new home Elizabeth Cottage on Haunted Lane is a dream, and despite being very much a city girl Eve is looking forward to spending time in this quaint little village, as she sets about interviewing the living to learn the secrets of the dead. Her first shock is learning that Bernard was the victim of murder, And, it soon becomes apparent that her subject was not universally loved.
The hub of the village seems to be split between the village pub, The Cross Keys Inn and the village shop run by Moira an avid gossip. But it is in the local tea shop that Eve encounters the irrepressible Viv that Eve finds a friend and learns much about the village and its inhabitants. But whilst gathering background information is useful Eve prefers to draw her own conclusions by interviewing the people closest to her subject. And so, she sets out to interview his staff at High House, Adam Cox, his secretary, Polly his new PR girl, and as she talks to those who were closest to him, she scents a mystery.
Rich in characters, and so entrancing is the picture of the village and its inhabitants painted, that the more I read the more I wanted to get in my car and drive to Saxford St Peter, even though I knew it didn’t exist.
However, the more people Eve speaks to the clearer it becomes that many people had reason to hate Bernard Fitzpatrick. So does this charming village house a killer? When a second person is killed Eve decides to turn detective.
An absolutely wonderful village murder. I couldn’t put it down. I see that there is a second book in the series due out on the 12 March 2020. I can’t wait. This book is most highly recommended,

Populated with colourful characters, this is a cosy mystery that gently pulls you along as each discovery Eve makes adds another suspect to a growing list. Her imagination often fills in a few blanks as she searches for the motive behind the killing.
Then a second murder ramps up the tension and puts Eve herself in danger. Being a stranger to the village, can she count on anyone to help her? Who can she trust when so many residents have motives to kill the world famous cellist she’s writing about?
Eve is a likeable, sensible and determined character, who has her own issues to contend with as she digs deeper into the mystery. While she seems to go to a lot of trouble to write an obituary, the story remains interesting and entertaining as it heads for a dramatic climax and reveal.
This is the first book in the series and I’m looking forward to reading the next to see how the author develops Eve through another murder mystery.
