Product description

Product Description

"Moana Hope is one of fourteen children. No fan of dolls or dresses, footy has always been her passion, and she would spend hours playing kick-to-kick with her dad and brothers at the local park. When her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Moana cared for him until his death four years later.

Footy and cricket provided an escape from the demands of domestic life, and she made state and national teams for both sports. She also began to explore her Maori heritage, getting tattoos that represented the dearest people in her life.

But as women’s football became more popular, being good at the game wasn’t enough—players started being pressured about the way they looked. Moana refused to grow her hair or cover her tatts, and for the first time in her life felt sidelined by the game. But later, inspired by a women's exhibition game, she realised what she was missing and returned with gusto to the game she loved.

As a powerful full-forward who can thrill crowds by taking big marks and kicking spectacular goals, Moana was signed by Collingwood as one of its two marquee players for the inaugural AFL Women's competition in 2017.

A high-flying athlete who is grounded by remarkable selflessness, Moana Hope is an inspiration for women and girls everywhere.

My Way is her story."

Good easy read. However annoyed by her continuous re-iteration that she is not a 'butch lesbian' and not all AFLW footballers are. Case of 'doth protest too much'. She comes off as a little homophobic, and like there is something wrong with being a 'butch lesbian'. Thought we have come a long way, but obviously not. She has the chance to be a role model for women to be comfortable in their own skin, and achieve what they want out of life, but comes across as someone who is stuck being scared about what people think of her. I expected so much more from her, she is a contradiction, worried about what she looks like, and then saying she doesn't care. Which one is it? She comes across as a strong female ambassador, but I have changed my mind by what I have read. She needs to get over herself, people dont care about tattoos, and short hair. Short hair does not make you look like a boy, like she says. If she was so worried about this, dont dress in masculine suits !!. There are many feminine clothes other than dresses, if she is so worried about this. YOU HAVE A CHOICE.......... If you dont care and want to be yourself, then be ok with it and stop complaining.

Right up there with all my favourite auto biographies. This is a straight up example of how Moana no matter what she faced lived and is still living her dream and how important family, friends and community are.
4.0 out of 5 stars Stay True to Yourself 2 April 2017
By Mrs. Europaea - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Rounding up to 4 stars.

In My Way, Moana Hope opens up and honestly shares her story, the good, the bad, the awkward and the humiliating. While it was a bit too colloquial for my liking, this is Hope's strength in sharing her story, relating it how she sees fit and staying true to herself in her own way.

Moana Hope shares her family life, her experience growing up with 13 siblings, losing her father to cancer, and being stereotyped in her sports career. She details how she turned to a "party lifestyle" to fill the gap when she took a hiatus from football because she couldn't deal with the scrutiny to her body and style choices.

Hope not only shares the hard lessons she's learned, but she is a big supporter of one thing: Staying True. She not only remains true to herself no matter what repercussions she has to face, but she supports individuals to do the same, telling them not to listen to the negativity, not to believe in sexist stereotypes, and certainly not to conform to any one image if it is not true to you.
