Product Description

It seems the things worth keeping are often the hardest to hold...

I had two things in life that mattered. My mother and my music.
Mama was taken from me too soon, and now music is all I have left. It’s the thing that’s pushed me right out of backwoods Georgia into Los Angeles, where the line between fantasy and reality shimmers and blurs. I’m finally making my way, making my mark. I can’t afford to fall for one of music's brightest stars. Not now. Music is all I have left, and I’m holding on tight with both hands. I won’t let go, not even for Rhyson Gray.

I had one thing in my life that mattered – music. The only constant, it’s taken me to heights most people only dream about; a gift dropped in my lap at birth. I thought it was enough. I thought it was everything until I met Kai. Now she’s all I think about, like a song I can't get out of my head. If I have to chase her, if I have to give up everything - I will. And once she's mine, I won't let go.

This is my first (and probably last) book by Kennedy Ryan. I had read glowing reviews for this book but it failed to keep my interest. The story took forever to develop and the characters were friends for what seemed like forever! The interactions between Rhys and Kai lacked spark and passion, and I found myself skimming chapters hoping to get to some sexy times but alas I was disappointed. I didn't end up finishing this book because I just got BORED!!! I didn't want to waste anymore of my time reading this book.

Part one of a trilogy, if you hate cliffhangers this one's probably not for you. Even though i usually avoid them as well this book is worth it, absolutely loved it. If you like hollywood fairytales and epic love stories then this one's for you!

Great story, loved the characters and loved the narrators. A bit upset book 2 doesn't have narration but the story is so good I'm willing to read it the old fashioned way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A ROCK STAR ROMANCE THAT STIRS THE SOUL 19 August 2016
By Kim R. - Published on

(Note: Revising my original star rating from 3-4 because after reading bk 2, I have a deeper understanding of the motivations behind the characters actions!!!!)

I have such mixed feelings about this book!!! Gaaaa! Where to begin?? Let me preface this review by saying that Kennedy Ryan is without question an incredibly gifted author. Her writing is engrossing, emotionally charged and metaphorical, and her literary voice is so beautiful it literally penetrates the soul!! And make no mistake...I invested PASSIONATELY in this romance. In fact, there were many moments of raw, powerful emotion throughout that brought tears to my eyes.

But accolades aside, I had some significant issues with this romance. While I had really high hopes going into MY SOUL TO KEEP because there was so much buzz surrounding this book, and I adore the premise of two singers who become each other’s muses and make beautiful music together, I have to say parts of this story fell flat for me. The novel started off with an emotional whallop, and I was initially swept up in this breathtaking romance, but as the story progressed, it kind of fizzled.

It all pretty much boils down to this: While I loved, loved, LOVED Rhyson Gray (he is pure Alphalicious rock star perfection!), Kai frustrated me to no end!! I admired her strength and independence, but she came across as self absorbed, overly stubborn and even self-righteous at times, and she basically kept Rhys at arm’s length, in the dreaded "Friend Zone," for the majority of the book. There was just too much push-pull between them, exasperating stops and starts, and Kai’s reasons for not wanting to lose herself in Rhys, for wanting to make it as a dancer/singer on her own accord and not ride on a mega superstar's coattails, just wore thin after a while.

I get that the author wanted to build a solid foundation of friendship before they embarked on a full-fledged love affair and appreciated that the heroine was going through the stages of grief over her mother's death and needed to heal. And as far as friendships go, theirs was rich and poignant and resonated deeply. And when they finally committed to each other and went full throttle ahead with the romance it was BLAZING HOT! But in my opinion, there just weren't enough sizzling romantic sparks to sustain the slow burning romance PRIOR to them becoming a couple.Their interaction was just too platonic for TOO LONG.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was how fiercely devoted Rhys was to Kai, how he loved her with every fiber of his being, but the problem was his romantic feelings never felt fully reciprocated because of her emotional hang ups. The hero spends too much of the book pursuing the heroine and to little avail, which makes for a very one-sided romance. It annoyed me to no end how he would go above and beyond to prove his devotion, but she would rebuff his sweet, noble gestures out of misguided pride. And then when they FINALLY kissed and made love she pushed him away. AGAIN. This was a pinnacle turning point, the moment "Kaison" devotees had been waiting for with baited breath, but because it ended on such a sour note it ruined the moment for me. Where was the passion, the elation, the overwhelming joy of finally coming together after all that buildup?

Since there was not enough forward progression of their relationship for much of the story, it made for slow as molasses pacing. The plot was bogged down with too much external melodrama (mostly pertaining to the hero's dysfunctional family strife and Kai's burning ambition to make it in the cutthroat music industry) and not enough toe curling romance.

And because it took them so long to finally surrender to their feelings, when it eventually happened it was kind of a case of too little, too late for me. And alas their happiness was woefully short-lived anyway. It seemed like there was one obstacle after another keeping them apart, and the emotional black moment at the end, brought on by Rhys's manipulative actions, seemed way out of character for a hero we have grown to love and admire. And the soul-shattering fallout left this reader FUMING!

That said, I MUST see this series through to the end because the cliffy wrecked me and I need my HEA! I am literally chomping at the bit to find out how "Kaison's" love finally perseveres in book 2, DOWN TO MY SOUL, and I have total confidence that this author will give us an epic payoff.

Bottom line: The author has a beautiful, evocative voice and a gift for telling a soul-deep story that tugs at the heartstrings. But while I truly WANTED to rejoice fully in this soulful romance, it was difficult at times because it did not always reach a high note. Nevertheless, I still recommend this book because of the author's writing prowess and the fact that I love me a hot, possessive rock star BBF!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Beautiful, Breathtaking 7 December 2015

My Soul To Keep was a truly emotionally charged read for me! It felt so real that when I was done I had a hard time digging myself out from under it to get back to reality.
Rhys and Kai both have pasts that have effected who they are.
Kai suffers from abandonment issues and Rhys suffers from growing up with parent’s who put their needs before his and only cared about the money he brought in and how better to use him to suit their wants and desires.
When Rhys meets Kai you can feel the soul searing connection that have and it makes your heart beat faster.
They start out as friends but they are connected on such a level that you can almost see a tether from one soul to the other. It’s as if the Heavens made them one for the other and their pieces fit together perfectly.
The music in this story just ebbs and flows along with the love and passion that Rhys and Kai have for each other.
It’s not easy to put a story like this into words so that you feel the emotion that I feel as I write this review, for you to feel that you will have to read the book. I know the pain of their pasts on a very intimate level, but I also know the feeling of finding your soul mate and the missing piece that makes you whole and this story completely encompassed all of that and so much more.
It is breathtakingly beautiful and will bring you to tears so I suggest you keep the tissues handy.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the love for "Kaison"! 17 June 2016

Oh my word, this book, these characters!

I’m not sure what I can say about this book that hasn’t already been said. I loved it.
Kennedy Ryan has such an amazing way with words- her writing is lyrical and beautiful, and utterly enchanting. She has a way of holding me captive with her story-telling, pulling me in and keeping me hooked until the very last word.

MSTK is the epitome of a slow burn. This is a true strangers-to-friends-to-lovers tale, with Kai and Rhyson’s relationship building at a purposeful pace. Rhyson had the patience of a saint, I loved how deeply he cared about Kai. You know Kai felt the same, but because of her past and the plans she had for her future she held Rhys at an arm length, until the pull between them became too much for her to resist. They had such a wonderful friendship and when they finally took their relationship to the next level it was nothing short of perfection.

I’m desperate to start DTMS because of how this book ended. Just as it seemed Kai and Rhys were on a path to happily ever after, we’re thrown for a loop when secrets, lies, and even a little deception are added to the mix. Even though we know that everything Rhys does, and has done, is for Kai’s benefit , because he loves her, it doesn’t ease the frustration and hurt it caused. I have no doubt Kennedy will give Kaison the HEA we all yearn for- but I’m anticipating there will be more heartache to endure before these 2 soul mates reach that point.

Such an amazing story. At first I thought another rockstar live story but Nooo this is so much better and more. The storyline was very well developed. The characters were so amazing they made the story shine. I just loved how the Author makes you live each character for who they are in the story. I cried and laughed with each chapter I read. I didn't want to put my kindle down. I was
Mesmerized with the flow of the story. I can't wait to get into book two. A must read!!
5.0 out of 5 stars You Will Not Regret Buying This Book! 15 August 2016

This book was SOOO good! I loved every minute of it and once it was done…I NEEDED more! This is defiantly a fun, fluffy read that is also gut-wrenching. I would have to say that this may be my favorite NA book. I know! I have not felt this way about a NA book since I read Beautiful Disaster, but after examining both books, I think this one takes the cake.

Ryan’s writing in this book is excellent. It was easy to understand, but also was full of beautiful quotes. I also loved that this book alternates between the points-of-view of our two main characters. It really gave readers insight into the histories and development of the characters. I have found that books written this way are becoming my favorite. It is nice being able to read from both male and female perspectives because it makes the story feel more well-rounded.

I really enjoyed the plot of this book. I have never read a rock star romance before, but this one has defiantly started a new obsession for me. I did feel like this book was full of angsty drama, but I loved it. I found it super addictive and really entertaining. I thought the story was full of twists and turns that I was not expecting.

The characters in this book are amazing! I really liked Kai because she was very relatable, however, sometimes I wish she would have been more confident. I also thought there was instances where her decisions were foolish and she could have saved herself some heart-ache if she would have just told the truth. I absolutely, positively LOVED Rhyson. If you like Travis from Beautiful Disaster, then you will love Rhyson too. They were very similar, but I think that I liked Rhyson a little bit more. I also liked that both characters had complex back stories that just added to their development. The supporting characters were great too and I hope to learn more about them in the sequel.

The romance in this book is so good. I liked that this book did not have any insta-romance. Rhyson and Kai started as friends and then their romance bloomed from there. This romance is very be warned. I will have to say that Rhyson is the protective type, and the majority of the time it came off as sweet, but there was one instance in which he appeared psychotic. I wouldn’t categorize this as a unhealthy relationship, but I thought I would warn readers that there is some instances of extreme behavior.

Overall, I would defiantly recommend this book! It was AMAZING! I have already bought the sequel and am planning on reading it soon. Unfortunately, this is going to be a duology with a novella. I wish that there was going to be more, but I also look forward from reading something else from Ryan. Please pick this book up if it sounds like something you might enjoy, you won’t regret it!
