The bond between sisters is deep, and in this absorbing tale of domestic suspense from award-winning writer Ruth Dugdall, we are drawn into the relationship between Sam, who wants to die, and Jena, who barely survived a brutal attack.
Eighteen months ago, with Jena lying unconscious in the hospital, the truth about what happened to her that night was all that Sam cared about. But some facts are so shocking that the only way to cope with them is to blank them out.
Now Jena is back in the world and recovering her life, but Sam is dying on an anorexia ward. As time starts to run out for her wasted body, Sam’s therapist tries a radical and dangerous approach: he brings to life the past she is dying to escape with a box of old photographs. If Sam is brave enough to face what she has locked away, can she trust her own memories?
As a reader, I was transfixed by this dark and suspenseful tale of two sisters and the secrets and lies at the heart of their world. Just like Sam, I longed to know the truth—and when it came, as horrifying as it was, I could not look away.

Sam is seventeen, starving herself and longing for oblivion. Her sister, Jena, is mentally scarred and desperate to remember. Between them, they share secrets too terrible to recall.
Eighteen months earlier, Sam was still full of hope: hope that she could piece together Jena’s fragmented memory after the vicious attack that changed their family forever. But digging into the past unearthed long-hidden lies and betrayals, and left Sam feeling helpless and alone in a world designed to deceive her.
Now, in a last bid to save her from self-imposed shutdown, Sam’s therapist is helping her confront her memories. But the road to recovery is a dangerous one. Because Sam has not only been lying to her doctors: she’s been hiding dark secrets from herself.

This was a brilliant read from start to finish. No clues were dropped along the way to the final ending, which made it a refreshing change to other books. I cannot even liken it to other books as it is unique in its style.
The main character in this book is an anorexic young girl who tries to solve what happened to her older sister some years before. Usually in these types of books the main character is an older alcoholic women with mental issues. The author writes about more disturbing family issues that I have not come across in this genre before. The book kept me interested until the end mainly as I wanted the guilty people brought to justice.
Pity about the subtitle above. It’s a well written book, suspense well maintained, but if you know there’s a twist it doesn’t take Einstein to predict it. I urge potential readers to only pay attention to the stars given, then the book will not disappoint. Also urge Amazon to remove the “brilliant twist” from all blurbs.
The book filled me in on eating disorder. It was not an enjoyable read but I am pleased I finished it, i needed to know how that the hero was going to make it. a book worth the effort
A very enjoyable, fast paced read. Difficult to leave down. Would recommend it for those that enjoy a good storyline, with many twists and turns along the way .
