My Last Lie by Ella Drummond had a bit of a slow start but once it going it was a fantastic book. I did find that a lot of things were repeated throughout the book and I did guess the who but not the why early on. Other than that I really enjoyed it and read it quite quickly. I look forward to seeing what Ella has up next for us.
Theo and Pilar are the golden couple, they have a fabulous life. Or they did until a year ago when Pilar was involved in a car accident and they lost their baby. Needing a new start they sell up and move to a beautiful home in Cornwall. They keep their secret from their new neighbours, but Pilar is also keeping another secret from her husband. But somebody in town seems to know and is targeting her, scaring her and making her life miserable. There are a lot of twists and interesting characters in this book, not all of them pleasant!

Contrived and boring

I'm very surprised by the number of good reviews. I've read better books with worse reviews.
This book was made up of lots of words but little story. Pilar and Theo lose a baby in tragic circumstances. They move to cornwall. Pilar appears perfect in every way. Theo is handsome and apparently very rich as he could afford a massive house and Pilar could play in her art studio all day. Her doctor from London happened to be in a relationship with Anna the estate agent in Cornwall. The story is simply that the doctor showed concern for Pilar so Anna was jealous and Anna moved things around in Pilar's house, set up a camera and later went to the house intending to stab Pilar. That's as exciting as this book gets.
It is full of pathetic flaws. Pilar's mother gets burnt by white spirits left in the cooking oil jar by an unknown person. so Pilar and Theo go for a romatic break away.
They discover someone has put a camera in the house so Theo goes away with work and does nothing about the camera.
The book is full of Pilar and Theo being tactile and kissing and making love. Constant reference to him putting his hand around her waist, touching her arm, kissing her hard. It read like a mills and boon book. Yet the grande finale was that the baby that died wasn't Theo's as Pilar had a one night stand. How she knew the baby wasn't Theo's was never explored.
I thought the story was simply contrived. Pilar was so pathetic. I read to the end hoping there would be a dramatic twist but this was not a psychological thriller at all. It was slow and mostly uneventful.

Poor poor Pilar

My Last Lie starts with a shocking and rather distressing prologue which would test any couple not matter how strong their relationship. Fast forward twelve months (and what a year that was by the sound of it) and Pilar and Theo are starting afresh.
Throughout I had a constant niggle that the author was hiding something from me; what it was, I just didn't know. I had to suspect everyone. Who was out to disrupt Pilar and Theo's new life in Cornwall? Is it someone in this idyllic Cornish village terrorising this damaged couple or has a ghost from the past followed them to their new home?! Given Pilar's turbulent past year, it could be easy to think it was all in her mind but as things escalate, I was left with no doubt there was a third party involved.
This engrossing domestic noir had me hooked, whizzing through the pages in two evenings and keeping me up past midnight to get to the climactic end. This is the first I've read from Ella Drummond and based in My Last Lie, it won't be the last!

What a tension builder!

What a tragic beginning to a story, a death of a new life in a random car accident. So Theo and Pilar just want to get away from everything that reminded them of their loss. They wouldn’t forget, ever, but the constant reminders had just been too much. They left everything and everyone behind them and headed to new beginnings where no-one knew them.
A beautiful house and the perfect place for Pilar to take up painting again and even start teaching her skills a little. The perfect couple, so everyone thought, beautiful, successful and a chance to privately mend the gap that their loss had put between them. But when little things begin to happen Pilar doesn’t know if she is losing her mind.
This is a story that makes you feel a little uneasy to begin with working to whoa what is cracking off is pretty serious stuff. There are quite a few characters who all have problems, so I easily got quite paranoid about who could be playing round with their lives and why?
The more that the story unfolds, the more cracks are discovered in all the relationships in the story, be it husband and wife, mother and daughter or friends. That is what I liked a lot about this story, no-one was perfect, with an accumulation of everything in their lives that made them who they were.
I loved how the story came together in the last few chapters, super ending. A brilliant debut, very much looking forward to more.

Engaging and sinister!

My Last Lie is an engaging story from Ella Drummond. The blurb and the cover caught my eye when I first saw this book mentioned and I couldn’t wait to start it.
We meet Pilar and Theo who are making a fresh start in Cornwall after suffering a devastating trauma from losing their baby. Pilar begins to make friends in the local community and sets up an art class at her home. For a while everything appears to be going perfect in their lives, they are living in their dream home, and they seem to be getting on with the rest of their lives. But someone is on the outskirts watching, waiting for their moment to strike and they are determined to make sure Pilar suffers for the secrets she is hiding.
I think what I enjoyed most about this book was Ella’s writing. It is engaging, and I grew interested in the lives of the characters on the page. Ella did keep me thinking that something dangerous was about to happen and I did feel on tenterhooks as I kept expecting something to happen to Pilar or Theo, especially when strange things start to occur in their home.
This is a story that does take time to build. It isn’t fast paced, but there is an edgy feeling to the plot which does create a sinister tone, and there are definitely some scenes that got my heart racing as I began to wonder what secrets were going to be revealed. And I have to say that Ella Drummond did turn the tension up a notch in the final chapters when we finally get to learn the truth about what happened in Ella’s past, which she managed to keep under wraps. There was a sinister ending which is making me wonder what is happening to the characters beyond the final page.
This is an engaging debut that will draw you into the lives of its characters. I will definitely be looking out for more from Ella Drummond.

A compulsive read.

I picked up this book with every intention of just reading a couple of chapters before catching up on some housework. Well the housework sadly never got done. From picking the book up, I was wholly engrossed until I turned the last page. An afternoon gone just like that. Obviously I don't regret for one moment that the housework was put on hold as I thoroughly enjoyed devouring My Last Lie.
From the first page of this novel I very quickly became absorbed in Pilar and Theo's life. A move to an art deco house in Cornwall in an idyllic little village, there was so much to fall in love with. In fact at times, I forgot just what sort of genre I was reading as I was happily day dreaming of living Pilar's life. It soon becomes clear though that something is afoot.
The author very much loves to tease her audience with red herrings and the mounting suspense. She had me question everyone that was in Pilar and Theo's lives, even at times having me doubt the couple themselves also! I didn't trust anyone and was constantly changing my mind as to who could be behind the strange going on's in the couples new home.
My Last Lie is a mesmerizing read that gentle drew me in and wouldn't let me go. It was so compelling that there was no way I was going anywhere until I had finished it. The authors writing style really does make this a compulsive and unputdownable read. Loved it and can't wait to read more by the author.
