Cecilia Howison, the rich and well-known daughter of a prominent East Tennessee family, appears to be the perfect Southern girl, cultured, gracious, virginal. The actual lesbian she is feels restless and ready for something new. She finds it in a high mountain meadow: a girl, wearing nothing but overalls, asleep beside a violin. Cecilia accepts the challenge.
Airey Fitch is the mainstay of her family’s hard-scrabble hill farm. She has no love for the Howisons or any their kind, who now, in 1931, are evicting the mountain folk to create a new national park. Despite them, she will hang on, despite them, she will seek a life in music. When Cecilia offers to make that happen, Airey dares to trust her. And wonders at Cecilia’s hold on her thoughts.
Cecilia understands all too clearly the risks she runs by wooing Airey Fitch but cannot stop, lured like a moth to Airey’s flame. Airey wants more than the passion Cecilia gives her—wants her heart. But the world they live in forbids it, and Cecilia is faced with a choice that only love can make.

About the author

I am a Canadian living in the UK, going from the big skies and mountains to central London, from camping and snowshoeing to Hyde Park and umbrellas.
I've done a variety of jobs: designer, editor, rights manager, and copywriter in small feminist and independent publishing and book distribution, carpenter, a short time in a bookshop, a shorter time as a bodyguard, freelance editor, copywriting and, finally, designing and running websites, mostly for massive global companies.
My first published stories were science fiction. My first published novel was "The Wolf Ticket" (currently out of print, althugh a few rmainders are still available). I have written short stories for lesbian anthologies, and publish poetry under a different name. My second novel, "My Home is on the Mountain" is set in a different time and place. I am endlessly interested in the way lesbians in the past have found ways of living their lives and loving each other in spite of the oppression they endured then, and which many still do. See also my book's website (with lots of background information) at: myhomeisonthemountain.com and my general website caroclarke.com.
I have travelled extensively, including Antarctica, the Gobi, Iceland, southern Russia, and Patagonia. If it involves a desert, the sea, or needing oxygen, I want to go! I also make a point of visiting the places covered by my books and so, for my second book, have spent time in the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains area in Tennessee.
I still live in London with lots of books and my snow-shoes (so useful!), within easy stroll of Buckingham Palace, should Her Majesty ever want to chat, in a residential area known as Little Venice, because it has 1½ canals.
