Eric Schissel (Kindle)
Generally good25 June 2016 - Published on Amazon.com
This abridged translation of the composer's Ecole buissonière (1913) contains a number of essays, most with some personal connection. A few disappoint, are perfunctory, make one wish they'd also disappeared in the abridging. Many of the rest, though, I anyway found especially interesting, filling in connections between the composer and other musicians I'd heard of (or hadn't), for example.

Decent historical document19 September 2013 - Published on Amazon.com
This autobiographical tome hardly scratches the surface of a great man's life and mind. Just a nice catalogue of his musical upbringing and later public events. In particular, I was looking for anything on Saint-Saens' film scoring adventures, having read that he was actually *the* first person to ever write music for a movie, but I was left bereft.

Interesting glimpse behind the scenes of the music world19 March 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
Great book about the life of an important composer of the Romantic Movement. You really get a sense of who he was as a person, and you can't miss his opinions. He either lover or hated music, musicians, and the teaching styles of his day.
Insider stuff really interesting19 March 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
Looking inside the music - inside the world of the composers is very interesting. I like reading period novels, so this non-fiction period book was fun.
