One of the best if not the best resource for understanding the art of musical composition in the form of a book.

I've read a lot of books on music in my life: harmony, orchestration, arrangement, composition. While I found many of these books great, I always struggled to find a book that dealt with all the aspects of music and how they interact to deal with the problems of variety and continuity.

This book has given me a great insight on the topics of motive development, organising material, transitions (!! the most important topic yet the most overlooked by other books on composition), continuity, novelty, small or large forms and so on..

I think that you really know your craft when you're able to explain it in a simple, understandable way and Mr. Belkin has succedeed admirably in this, showing his deep knowledge of the subject.

Totally recommended.

So many reviewers have pointed out many of the very nice features of this teatrise, so I will just state that, as a composer, I think this book is essential for any serious aspiring composer of any style and genre. It is very practical, is backed up by decades of experience in composition and all explanations, concepts and exercises are super clear and ever focused on the immediate goal to become a better composer.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
