Excellent source of information and presented in a logical, organised and thoughtful way. It sets forth essential concepts in a simple, accessible manner while also going into appropriate detail and providing insights on the thought processes of the great composers. The emphasis on style-independent principles is also very valuable. Must-read for anyone interested in the principles of composition.
One of the best if not the best resource for understanding the art of musical composition in the form of a book.
I've read a lot of books on music in my life: harmony, orchestration, arrangement, composition. While I found many of these books great, I always struggled to find a book that dealt with all the aspects of music and how they interact to deal with the problems of variety and continuity.
This book has given me a great insight on the topics of motive development, organising material, transitions (!! the most important topic yet the most overlooked by other books on composition), continuity, novelty, small or large forms and so on..
I think that you really know your craft when you're able to explain it in a simple, understandable way and Mr. Belkin has succedeed admirably in this, showing his deep knowledge of the subject.
So far, I’ve found this book to be very informative. It was bought as a Christmas present and therefore I’ve not read it all yet but it proposes some interesting ideas for musical composition.
