The jazz songs in upcoming Pixar film, Soul, were written and performed by Jon Batiste. Best known for being the bandleader on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he also served as a cultural consultant for the movie. "This film has a lot of light in it. It's a lot of light and life force energy, I like to call it.was really the beginning of me figuring out my way into the jazz music in the film. Finding the spiritual tone." Music From & Inspired By Soul LP available December 18th.

When I saw that this along with the companion score LP were being sold as unique vinyl releases, I was jazzed...pun intended. I jumped on the opportunity to claim a pair even before the movie was released. Pre-emptively buying this latest release from PIXAR, having a great track record with excellent movie scores, I figured I was pretty safe.
Well, I'm not completely let down, but I am disappointed overall for a couple reasons.
- A unique vinyl release. (+1)
As far as I know, there is no CD or even streaming version of this album on Spotify and the like. I appreciate that kind of attention to vinyl.
- Beautiful case design! (+1)
It features a nice layout with beautiful images of the characters in the Dorthea Williams quartet.
- A positive listening experience overall. (+1)
The movie was great and it is fun to pop an LP on the table and let the movie replay along with the music in your head.
- Unremarkable choice of music. (-1)
I'm not quite sure how Sebastian from "La La Land" would rank the jazz on this album. I am no jazz aficionado, but this music is not that enjoyable in my personal opinion. There are some fun riffs and a couple neat tracks, but aside from that I find the jazz featured here to be senseless and without direction. Maybe I've just discovered that real jazz isn't my thing. There are also a couple short themes that were used from the film that are included. My feelings about these are mixed as I would have enjoyed it if they had written longer versions of them that fleshed them out more. I'm grateful that they included them, but they feel somewhat abrupt.
- ABYSMAL Quality Control. (-1)
(Walt Disney Records, I'm looking at you here) First off, the disc itself seems thicker than most circa 1980's LP's. The outside of the disc is not tapered to a pointed edge - it's left blunt, giving it a sloppy appearance. The first disc I got in the mail had to be returned because of multiple quality issues. The pressing was off center, which would have resulted in inconsistent pitch. The label on the LP was itself printed at least half an inch off center, nearly making it unreadable. And the surface of the disc had an abundance of handling residue...not oil from skin, but some kind of residue from the gloves they must use. Like too many media companies releasing modern vinyl LP's, Walt Dinsey Records seems to be in it more for the money than making a quality product. Please get it together people!
