Product Description

From New York Times bestselling author Jo Beverley comes a holiday tale of romance and intrigue in which a spirited woman hunts for the truth about her fallen lover…

On Christmas Eve, a group of costumed mummers—or actors—arrive at Torlinghurst where they will perform for Jack Beaufort, the new Duke of Cranmore. The mummers have gone from manor to manor in hopes of getting paid for their shows in drink, pies, and pennies. But among them is an impostor who only wants revenge.

Justina Travers has been in mourning for three years. Her beloved fiancé Simon perished in an ambush at the hands of the French. She believes the one survivor of the attack—“Lucky” Jack Beaufort—committed treason against his country and led his men to their death. Hoping to end Jack’s luck for good, Justina uses the mummers’ play to sneak into his home, but there she uncovers a dramatic twist that shakes her convictions…and just might melt her vengeful heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Cookie with a Pinch of Vengeance 26 February 2014
By Ann Elliot - Published on Amazon.com

This novella is a great Christmas short story. The action takes place on Christmas Eve and the story is compressed to allow it to fit a short story format. Beverly's characters are always well done and they grow within the time line of the story. This time, there is a woman wishing to avenge her dead fiancee and the tortured nobleman/officer who is the object of her mistaken fury.

The look into Christmas traditions of the time is fun. Beverly always creates good annoying relatives for her hero and heroine. There are a lot of bright moments in such a short book.

Women who assist the War Office during the time of Napoleon always seem a bit far fetched to me. The heroine could have handled the action without any such connections, but I managed to ignore the opening of the story and focus on the subsequent developments.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet tale of mourning 18 December 2013

Justina Travers joins a group of mummers to gain entrance to the Duke of Cranmore's home, Torlinghurst. She hope to find proof of the Duke's treason, but instead finds a man as lonely as she is. This short novella is a touching story of people lost in their pasts. Once again Ms Beverley gives us a story that moves along and touches us deeply.

And get out the tissues. Story is well constructed and fast paced. You may need the tissues near the end, I did.

We are led gently from what we think we know to what we need to know, and from hatng and despairing to what we want to know. All very entertainingly and skilfully. Satisfying.

I can get more engaged with the characters . With novella I feel like I have only been introduced, not emotionally involved with the story.
