If you already have read Zollo's Songwriters on Songwriting then you will not be surprised that this volume of over 650 pages of interviews with leading songwriters doesn't deviate from the successful model introduced in his first book. If you haven't bought the former then I'd suggest buying both as they complement each other well.
Songwriters On Songwriting: Revised And Expanded
When I first read the list of interviewees, I was slightly disappointed to read that there were some songwriters from the first volume included again including Brian Wilson, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Simon and Randy Newman. Rest assured these are new interviews but personally I would have preferred the space to be given over to alternate songwriters who hadn't featured in his previous book. Actually across the two books there could have been more female songwriters and more from diverse backgrounds, maybe that is a reflection of the failings of the music industry itself.
The scope is as you might expect with folk, rock n roll, Broadway, Jazz, Country, Motown, Pop and Rock well represented from the likes of Lieber and Stoller, Loretta Lynn, Herbie Hancock, Kris Kristofferson, Bernie Taupin, Bryan Ferry, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, James Taylor, Joan Armatrading, Richard Thompson and Sia. That is just the tip of the iceberg as there are 46 interviews in all.
As in the first volume you will learn a lot from these interviews and there are plenty of albums and songs you can then listen to either after or alongside reading this book.

If You Have Zollo's First Book, You'll Want This One Too --- If Not, You'll Want Them Both --- Highly recommended.
As with the first book, there is a wide range of writers and music represented and the interviews are more in depth than what you'd find elsewhere. I find it inspiring and motivating for myself as I pick up new ideas for writing songs. It doesn't matter what music you prefer, I highly recommend reading ALL of the interviews. You may learn something new that you can apply to your own songwriting. I've purchased some books on songwriting as a craft and none have been as useful as reading the interviews in the 2 interview books by Zollo. I hope there will be more book in the future.

Embracing The Song: Paul Zollo Mines the Hearts and Minds of Genius, Creates a Tapestry Carole King Would Weave.
Reviewed in the United States on 8 September 2017Verified Purchase
Paul Zollo is a singer-songwriter.
He spent his early youth playing in Chicago pubs, strumming through Cat Stevens tunes, honing his craft. Finding the groove that all great musicians long to experience: From working at playing music. To delivering an experience in Flow, for your audience, and yourself.
It's this. And a sincere interest in and love for the craft, that sets Paul apart.
If you haven't read his prior version of Songwriters On Songwriting , go get it right now. It's cool. I'll wait.
OK, now that you've read through the first edition, it's time to put your Big Boy pants on and grab this one.
As you can see by the Table of Contents (see images attached) it's a cornucopia of exceptional artists. The real deals.
Anyone who can effectively dive into the songwriting process with both Don McLean of American Pie fame (remember: it was an Pop Classic long before it became the title of a Cult Comedy) AND Aimee Mann (she likes boxing. Like, Ali-style). Joan Armatrading (I think she was partly responsible for my puberty) and Elvis (Costello - Who once said he would be THE Elvis we'd remember).
To successfully bounce from one artist to the other, asking unique questions fitting for the talent in front of you - that's skill.
To dive deep into the prose, and illuminate the salient points for us, the reader - that's talent.
So, dear reader, I implore you: Get the book. Friend Paul on Facebook. Visit him as his lilting vocals dance among the coffeehouses and stages of LA. And read. Learn. Embrace the lyrical genius gratefully penned within these pages.

A homerun. A COURAGEOUS effort, which took years to complete!

Paul aimed high and knocked it OUT OF THE PARK. AGAIN!
Just like Paul's previous tome, "Songwriters on Songwriting," Paul interviewed dozens of the best known and most highly respected songwriters from all genres; Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, John Prine, Rickie Lee Jones, Elvis Costello, James Taylor... The list goes on and on.... 700 pages of person-to-person talks, one songwriter to another.
This is no fluff piece. It's the art and the craft of their personal songwriting process. And so much more; a peek behind the curtain at the real person behind the hoopla and fame.
Paul is a highly respected songwriter in his own right, the Senior Editor of American Songwriter magazine, and the host of the Songwriting School of Los Angeles' interview show, "Songwriters on Songwriting, LIVE!", which is streamed and open to the public in real time.
I've paced the floor for 2 years, and it was worth the wait. As an active musician and songwriter myself, I can't recommend it any higher. Pick up the previous work also, "Songwriters on Songwriting. "
