Originally recorded in January 19, 1974, Mingus At Carnegie Hall was released as a 1LP that only featured 2 long tracks ("C Jam Blues" and "Perdido") from the concert; one track per LP side, and features Jon Faddis, Charles McPherson, John Handy, George Adams, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Hamiet Bluiett, Don Pullen, and Dannie Richmond. Yet the original concert in January of '74 included 2 hours of performances, but nearly 70+ minutes were left on the cutting room floor. With jazz music on the decline in the US in the 1970s, Atlantic Records was probably concerned about releasing a 3LP set at a higher price point that only the most ardent fans would purchase at the time. Well after 47 years and in honour of 2021's Black Music Month, Run Out Groove has righted the course of this ship, issuing the complete 1974 Mingus At Carnegie Hall album with over 72 minutes of unreleased material and putting the original running order of the concert in correct sequence.

In my opinion it's pretty shoddy to write 'deluxe edition' down the spine of a flimsy tri-fold piece of cardboard that has no inner sleeves to stop the discs from being scratched by the case. And as for the six panel foldable 'booklet', well, it's not very big! It seems that CDs now either come poorly packaged like this or in enormous £200 boxed sets.
A final note about the sequencing. In the publicity material, they make a big deal about "putting the original running order of the concert in correct sequence" (which is fair enough even though there were only two tunes released originally, each on one side of a record) but the final tune of set one is put at the beginning of disc 2, even though the whole of set one would have fitted on to one disc. This does make the discs of comparable length but surely keeping the two sets on separate discs would have been a better idea.
I'll stop moaning now and give it a listen!
CD1, tracks 2-4 & CD2, track 1 feature Charles Mingus(bass); Jon Faddis(trumpet); George Adams(tenor sax); Hamiet Bluiett(baritone sax); Don Pullen(piano) & Dannie Richmond(drums).
CD2, tracks 2 & 3 include the above personnel plus Charles McPherson(alto sax); John Handy(tenor sax) & Rahsaan Roland Kirk(tenor sax, stritch).
Highlights are 'Peggy's Blue Skylight'; 'Celia' and a lengthy 'Fables of Faubus' plus the two previously issued jams on Ellington standards, 'Perdido' & 'C Jam Blues'.
The music is powerful, passionate and adventurous and it's wonderful to hear Mingus's complete Carnegie Hall concert at last on this magnificent 2-CD set.
