I don't normally go for self-help books, because they frequently have an "I did it. This worked for me, so it will work for you too." mentality or a "just choose to be happy" mentality (I have bipolar disorder- I don't make a lot of "choices" about my moods.) I'm not saying this is absent from Ms. Thompson's book, but it did not feel as heavy handed as it is in so many others. As it happens, I'm on a bit of a self-improvement kick so there are some things that I can take away from this book, for which I am grateful (something I need to try to be more of according to the book- and yes, I do feel better).
That being said, I am not a big believer in meditation or foregoing thoughtfulness to achieve mindfulness. Been there, done that, and got the "I went to the shrink's office and all I got was some lousy advice on New Age mysticism" T-shirt. I probably won't be spending 20 minutes in meditation thinking about what temperature the air moving in and out of my nose is, but that is just me.
For people with non-medical levels of anxiety, stress, or a desire to relax a little more though, there's case studies to show that meditation and mindfulness can be helpful, and this series of books is as good as any material I've seen in prepping oneself to make meditation or mindful awareness a habit.
From a writing standpoint, the book is well-written, reasonably well-edited, is a quick read and should be something you could soak up in a few days.
And she quotes the Fear is the Mind Killer monologue from Dune, one of two quotes about fear I keep written on an index card in my wallet. She gets an extra half star for that. (The other is Don't Panic from HGTTG in case you're curious.)
