This was my first Naima Simone narrative and what a nice surprise it was! The Millionaire Makeover had a light scenario that was reminiscent of a modern day Ugly Duckling fairytale, yet was also quite deep and very, very seductive. All the characters, but especially the main ones, were well-developed and fit in perfectly with the fast-paced storyline. Khloe was the hidden beauty, but with low self-esteem thanks to overbearing parents. In addition, her love life was unspectacular to say the least. Wealthy and successful Niall, her dead brother Michael's best friend, was an Irish Henry Caville lookalike, but embittered and with his own backstory. Grief-stricken by Michael's death, Khloe and a drunk Niall sought solace in each other's arms, but Niall felt guilty and bailed afterwards. Khloe was devastated because to her, it meant something/everything. Fast forward three years and in true rom-com style, Khloe won a date with the masked Niall at a charity bachelor auction. By this time, Khloe had moved on (sort of) and believed she was in love with her boss, Bennett (unrequited). She tried to put the whole 'Niall fiasco' to rest. However, Niall was inlisted to help Khloe 'shine' to make Bennett jealous and he needed to honour a promise. The dialogue and banter was exquisite, but the rub? Both Khloe and Niall's feelings for each reignited. I liked Naima Simone's style of writing which was a mix of contemporary with a more classic style. She obviously loves language and uses it well to describe, create imagery, frame the POVs and move the plot along. It was refreshing to read a book in past tense rather than the newly fashionable present tense, too. This book was a sweet, fun, humourous escapism narrative that didn't seem to require a lot deep thinking. Yet, it's deceiving, as Naima's inclusion of reflections, conversations, conflict, a range of emotions and vibrant descriptions, really does require a lot of thought.
One of the very best romances I've read out of the last 50. Loved the make over, loved her curves, lived her belief in herself and loved that her brother had the "sight" and was still a character in the plot.
To make the prince of her dreams jealous, Khloe Richardson needs a date, but when she bids on a bachelor at a charity auction, she gets the infamous lothario that gave her one night of passion and then left without a word in this spellbinding contemporary romance.
Niall Hunter promised his friend he’d stay away but here he is transforming his sister’s best friend from a shy wallflower to a sultry siren and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the gripping fairy tale as Niall can’t seem to remember just why he’s not supposed to want Khloe. The sizzling chemistry keeps intense desires burning strong between Khloe and Niall but due to a few emotional hang ups, past mistakes and the desire to honor his best friend’s wishes this relationship is stuck in a holding pattern full of emotional turbulence. These strong, compelling characters grab the reader’s attention while they capture the heart and the fast paced, smooth flowing plot captivates readers with lots of suspense, turmoil and romance.
Spine tingling tension catches the readers from the very beginning as Khloe is swept up into a situation that she feels is out of her league in order to achieve her heart’s desires and the tension continues to spiral higher as Niall sets out to help her with her goals of attracting another man. The intriguing events ensures that the readers want to know every last detail of Khloe’s transformation and Niall’s determination to keep his hands to his self and the well written scenes and details make it easy to picture each and every moment.
Another Bachelor Auction has sent my imagination into overdrive and has me wanting to bid on my own sexy bachelor of course, Khloe was lucky she had Niall to help her with her transformation….where can I find a Niall to help me with mine….hmmm?
