Product Description

Absolute Power Corrupts Even the Best of Friends.

Mildred Graeme is a witch that knows what it’s like to fail. She loathes small talk, struggles with magic, and grew up wretchedly poor. What’s easy for her best friend Evelyn, a wealthy, powerful socialite, is difficult for Mildred.

The two lifelong friends reunite at Chatham Castle where they fight together for the dream of a better world. Mildred wants to save the Network from political elitism, while Evelyn encourages it. When Evelyn gains power and threatens to obliterate the Network, Mildred realizes that she must overcome her fear of failure to save the lives of those she loves, even if it means betraying her best friend.

Mildred’s Resistance is the prequel to The Network Series and a gripping tale of intrigue, betrayal, and unexpected romance that defies all odds to rise above the ghosts of failure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mildred Is My Hero 17 July 2015

Mildred’s Resistance is a prequel to the other books in Cross’s Network Series, and in many ways it is a very different book. Mildred Graeme could not be more different than the heroine of those novels, Bianca. And as fantastic a character as Bianca is, Mildred now holds a special place in my heart. Quiet, studious, logical and from the most humble of origins, Mildred nonetheless steps up to become the leader and heroine her world needs when it needs her most.

Cross brings a wide variety of other characters to life in this book as well, most notably Mildred’s childhood friend-turned-adversary, Evelyn. The divergent paths these two women’s lives take demonstrate in a deeply compelling way the importance of the choices we make, of the difference between rising above one’s past and being consumed by it.

Mildred is a worthy heroine, far more so than most. Nothing is handed to her; she must fight, claw and scrape for every inch of success she achieves. By continuing to fight against increasing odds while displaying a level of grit, determination and certainty of purpose few possess, she inspires others to her side, though she never meant to do so. The sacrifices she makes for others—for everyone—were honestly heartbreaking to me. I’ve rarely felt this much empathy for a character, which is a testament to Cross’ ability to breathe life into her characters and her world.

Surrounding Mildred’s personal story is a rich, complex and exciting tale of a society on the brink, of conspiracies, magic, power struggles, resistance and, ultimately, revolution. Themes of the value of hard work, personal and educational freedom, self-worth and perseverance mean it is also an uplifting, inspirational story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. I'm hooked. 30 March 2016

Rating : 4.5 Stars (4 for the first half, 5 for the last)

I didn't know what to expect upon picking this book up. I liked it a lot! Katie is getting better and better. I liked this book even better than book 1, Miss Mabel's School for Girls. I think I may reread book 1 now.

Katie has built a world of her own. Her descriptive words pull you into each setting or emotion. I'm definitely a fan.
5.0 out of 5 stars I have truly fallen in love with this series and Mildred's Resistance does not disappoint 30 May 2016

I have truly fallen in love with this series and Mildred's Resistance does not disappoint. This prequel does a great job of helping Network Series readers understand the back story of the Central Network and it focuses on some of the characters (such as Mildred, Marten and Stella) who play large roles in Bianca's life throughout the series. I honestly think that this is my favorite book so far in the series (although I'm about to start reading the final installment, so I might change my mind soon!) and I feel this story really helps us readers understand who the High Priestess really was and what she stood for, as we don't get to know her as well in the other books.

I have read the books in the order that they were published and I have gone back and forth debating in my head when would have been the best time to read it. I did like reading it in the order I chose, but there's a part of me that wishes I had read it after Miss Mabel's School for Girls and before Antebellum Awakening, as I think I would have appreciated those characters more when they started playing a role in Bianca's life. I found myself going back afterwards and rereading much of Antebellum Awakening just so I could make those connections before I started on book 3 because I got so attached to them after reading Mildred's Resistance.

I felt that this book has so many important themes in it and it goes way beyond the good vs. evil theme. The book really portrayed how experiences can shape the decisions we make and that in life it is rarely so simple for people to be purely good or purely bad. It looks at the power of love for self, love for friends, and doing what you believe is right, at any cost. And sometimes those things do not always align with one another and that's when the hard decisions come to play. This is a story of love, friendship, self-sacrifice, duty, the power of manipulation and fulfilling one's destiny.
5.0 out of 5 stars Just read it already! 23 October 2015

So many questions answered that I was wondering from the other two books! The maps were extremely helpful! I loved the characters and the in depth description of the inner powers of the witches. I always love Katie's characters and getting to feel like I know them personally. If this is your first time reading a Katie Cross book, you will not be disappointed! She makes you feel for the characters as if you were standing next to them, experiencing it first hand. I wept with Stella, and felt her loss in my heart. I loved Marten and his stoic, steadfast, loyal and loving personality. And Mildred is fantastic, heroic, strong, selfless, you name it. I want to be like her when I grow up! Evelyn's emotional roller coaster keeps you completely locked in. Thank you Katie, for transporting me into this world every time I read part of the Network Series!

Katie Cross has really outdone herself yet again!

This is an amazing Prequel to the Network Series of Miss Mabel's School for for Girls. The insight into the legend of the school and the people of Antebellum is amazing! I love how involved you become with the characters in the story, and how you find yourself unable to put the book down. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you have a goal.

Would you use your new found power, or inner strength for good or evil? Open the book and find out for yourself.
