Product Description

The mission was supposed to be simple. Infiltrate an enemy’s stronghold outside Rome and eliminate its leader. For a Breed warrior as lethal as Ettore Selvaggio, AKA “Savage”, stealth assassinations are only one of his many cold-hearted specialties. But the last thing Savage expects to find behind enemy lines—in his target’s bed—is a woman he once adored.

It’s been years since Savage last saw beautiful Arabella Genova. Years he’s strived to banish to his past, along with the fierce desire he once felt toward Bella . . . and the irresistible calling of her blood that stirs in him even now, despite the fact that she belongs to another male.

But when fate throws Savage and Bella together again in a race for their lives, will his long-lost love prove to be the one woman he can’t live without, or the perfect weapon to destroy him?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Novella, But I Needed A Bit More 9 November 2016

( 3.5/5 stars rounded up! The latest entry into the 1001 Dark Nights books is a novella that is part of Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series. The Midnight Breed books are favorites of mine, although Adrian’s novellas have varying degrees of readability for me. Most I have really enjoyed, at least one I didn’t, and this one fell sort of in between. I enjoyed it, but it was not without a problem.

The Midnight Breed books are about a group of immortal vampire like warriors. There’s a whole lot of world building if you read the novels, but in the novellas, not so much. These warriors are the good guys, the ones you would call if something supernatural was threatening. And there is always a threat or a new villain, in this case a criminal group called, Opus Nosturm. In this story, warrior, Ettore Selvaggio, is sent to an enemy camp (or mansion, in this case) to take out a Breed male named Vito Massioni, a major drug dealer associated with the Opus Nostrum group, also known as the Breed’s biggest enemy now. While scouting the mansion in preparation to blowing it up, he sees a familiar face in one of the windows. Before he can carry out his mission, he has to be sure if it’s really her, the one woman he has never forgotten, Arabella Genova. Bella is a breedmate, one of the human women that can mate with a Breed male and live as long as he does, through the sharing of his blood. She was the sister of a friend of his, and he had fallen in love with her many years before. Things happen and he loses her forever, or so he thought. Seeing her, he knows he must rescue her.

This story ended up being a thriller of sorts. Since it is so short and a romance has to happen, it all goes very quickly. The trope here is star crossed lovers reunited, although with major problems before they can get their happily ever after. I liked the two main characters and thought they were worthy additions to the Breed novellas. There were just two or three peripheral characters in addition to the villain. And actually a broody, wounded Breed male is introduced later on in the story that I would bet will show up in another book or novella someday. If not, then I will be disappointed.

So, I did like the characters and the premise is very typical of one of these books-which I do enjoy. My problem came with the actual size of the novella. It starts at 13 percent in, and ends at 87 percent-which wouldn’t normally be a problem for me, but the whole thing is only 120 pages. This translates to very little actual story. I think there could be at least another thirty to forty pages or so, still be a novella, and tell a more involved story. I have had that problem in the past with these novellas. I wish they would give us enough of a story to warrant the price. Sorry, but I needed to mention this since it bothered me.

For Midnight Breed fans, in particular, I do heartily recommend this book. It’s a peek at more of our favorite warriors and their happily ever afters; just don’t expect a detailed, world building filled read. For people not familiar with this series, this book can standalone so don’t worry. I should also mention it’s an adult read due to sensual scenes.

Bottom line, I am glad I read it, but I am even more excited to read her latest full length book, Defy the Dawn, which I purchased recently.
4.0 out of 5 stars A short, sweet romance with all of the Breed action and intensity that I love about this series. 20 March 2017

Lara Adrian takes us back to Italy with this novella, where we catch up with Ettore ‘Savage’ Selvaggio, a Breed warrior who works for the Order in Rome alongside Lazaro Archer. Respected as the ruthless killer that he is, Ettore is sent on a mission to take out the key player in the distribution of the deadly drug, Red Dragon, but just as he is set to blow his target sky high, he spots the only woman he has ever loved behind enemy lines.

Bella Genova is a breedmate, and the younger sister of Ettore’s best friend from his pre-Order days. Their love was only beginning to blossom when they were cruelly torn apart, but in the ten years since they have seen each other none of that emotion has dimmed and she is equally as stunned as Ettore when he reappears in her life and, despite her protests, he quickly whisks her away.

There are misunderstandings to be cleared up and secrets to be revealed, but for the most part this is a chemistry-filled, super-functional reconnection of soul mates, and it’s a deliciously sexy and swoony second-chance at love for Ettore and Bella. But with a vicious madman after them and Bella’s family at risk, the danger isn’t over yet and there is some action and excitement before they can claim their HEA.

I really enjoyed this story. The romance is gorgeous, and it’s fast paced and intense from the very beginning - but given the history between the characters, and the fact that this is a novella and therefore needs to move quickly, I was totally fine with it.

This book doesn’t seem to have much impact on the overall Midnight Breed story arc, but there’s a great introduction to Scythe and Chiara who are the hero and heroine of the next book, and I really like set up for their story.

A great addition to the series, and as always I’m looking forward to continuing on.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great short story 19 March 2017

Great short story and it continues the story of the Breed and their fight against the Opus Nostrum. This is a wonderful series, and worth reading from the beginning. This story is about a couple broken up by her family thinking he is not good enough for her. He saves her, and her family's lives, then they bond. Well told, and leaves you wondering what will happen with Scythe and Chiara, I hope they get their own story.
5.0 out of 5 stars A hot romance and a timeless love story 21 April 2017

Another great Midnight Breed story. This time Bella and Ettore are reunited after years apart -- just in time to save Bella's remaining family from a sure death. While Ettore is a fierce warrior working for the Order, Bella is the heroine of the day, in the end, killing the rogue Breed that would have ended what is left of her and her family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet low in angst novella. Nice way to get to know a little bit of the Midnight Breed world. Really like the two MC 1 November 2016

A nice, low in angst, short novella. I LOVE the Midnight Breed world and so gettimg more is always nice. I was surprised that in this one there was a little bit more connection to the plot of the previous full novel. Usually these novellas are TOTALLY off the main plot line or rather the character in the main series. Near the end of the previous one we met Trygg a Breed male who escorted an Atlantean to safety, and hey! here he was in this one, and we got an idea about him and also got to meet his brother Scythe who sounds like a REALLY interesting guy! Who doesn't love a wounded hero, ha?

But I"m losing myself to the surrounding without mentioning the plot!
So let's talk about the MC for a moment here - Ettore and Bella knew each other ten years ago, they were lovers but they were forced apart and so now when they meet in the estate Ettore is about to blow apart (literally!) they are both more than surprised! Vito Massioni is a Breed male who works for Opus Nostrum spreading narcotics that turn males into monsters. Ettore, working for the Order is tasked with eliminating him and his lieutenants. He didn't DREAM he would find the sweet innocent Bella entangled in the mix. Bella is there against her will, Vito is using her special breedmate ability and keeping her family hostage so now that the estate is in flames they have to rush to save her family before Vito's men kill them.

Ettore and Bella loved each other back then and it's obvious nothing changed between them. It was sweet to read. There wasn't any angst between them. Bella understood why Ettore left her, what's important now is staying together. For Ettore it's somewhat the same, though he regretted leaving Bella behind he knows that he won't ever make the same mistake again.

Sweet novella. Nice way to get to know a little bit of the Midnight Breed world. I really hope that in one of the next novellas we'll get either Trygg or Scythe :)
