This story is absorbing, well structured and easy-to-read. The fictional Midnight draws on the history of the real Lundy ponies, and evokes the atmosphere of the time and place in which the tale is set.
I bought this book because of its Lundy connection, and would probably otherwise have dismissed it as a children's novel aimed at an audience of pony mad little girls. What I found was something with appeal to any age, so I was glad to have been drawn to it by my love of anything to do with Lundy, a wonderful island that I have only recently discovered in my mid 60s and of which I am now much besotted!
The characters are all entirely believable, and one cared what would happen to them, humans and equine alike. The learning curve through which young Jenny, the main protagonist, passed during the year covered in the story kept the pages turning. Engrossed, I read the whole thing in one sitting one night.
Because this was so beautifully written, I might now try some of this author's other works. I will certainly never dismiss anything as "Kiddies' Books" again! Superb reading for anyone.
