I received a copy of this book from Red Adept Publishing, LLC via NG in return for an honest review.

I really liked this book! Norse mythology and suspense enthusiasts, you'll get a real kick out of this book!

let's dive into the plot!

How did I go from a simple girl who works as a baker to being hunted all in a matter of days?
Solina Mundy is as normal as they get. She wakes up, bakes, craves for parent approval and loves her twin brother Mani with all her heart. He's always been there for her.
He's always protected her.
He's always loved her. Until the day Solina has a portentous dream of wolves and death,
She is then notified that Mani has died of a horrendously at the claws of animals.
determined to uncover what happened, Solina goes on a trip to Alaska.
There she meets two men who may have all the answers she craves- Aleksander Thorin and Val Wotan. The more Solina uncovers, the more trouble nip at her heels until the moment she has become the number one target. A wolf seeks to devour her life essence. All the sudden, her life is irrevocably changed to the dawn of Norse Gods and goddesses, Valkyries, grief, bitterness, murders, love and...Powers. Solina's life was never as it seemed.

This book was really cool.

honestly, i really enjoyed that! It had a part of norse mythology that i didn't know about so imagine my utter excitement when i researched and saw that this author was spot on in her concepts and mythology! Way to go Laurel, I can see you did extensive research in this area and it paid off brilliantly!

The writing was brilliant too, it's what made the entirety of the experience in this book so wonderful.

Sometimes you just need to get out of reality for a while and read a good paranormal fantasy. It is not my most favourite genre, but I really enjoyed this fun mythological/paranormal fantasy Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel.

Solina travels to Alaska following the death of her brother, to organise his belongings and his apartment. While she is there she spends time with her late brothers best friend Val and his friends, and their employer Thorin. It soon becomes apparent that whomever killed her brother is now after her. She has dreams of wolf-like creatures and discovers that her brother was killed by being torn to shreds by a wolf. Soon she is on a quest to discover who she really is and who she can trust, and is running for her life.

First of all I had to comment on the cover. I love it! I'm not sure why it grabbed me so much when I saw it, but it suits the book perfectly and is absolutely gorgeous!

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written, REALLY well written. The book grabbed me from the start!

I loved all the characters and it was great to watch them and their relationship with Solina develop. I loved Skyla, I found her to be one of my favourite characters. And I enjoyed Solina's character. Even though she did a few things that annoyed me.

I am not a big fan of love triangles in books. They make me cringe. A lot. But Laurel is clever here, she makes it a love triangle without having any of the characters actually commit. So its not a love triangle exactly.... Its hard to explain, It just works. I love the tension between the characters, especially Solina and Thorin. I was hoping that a bit more would happen between them, but she is obviously saving that for subsequent books!

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” - Robert Fulghum

This dream was worse, So. Much. Worse. Than all the others. Horrifying, bloody, savage. And the worst part?

It was true.

Solina’s brother is dead, torn apart by a wolf-like creature. A monster who talks. Who thinks, and plans, and has yet another goal.

Kill Solina. Eat her alive.

A baker by trade, an introvert by nature, Solina Mundy is pulled to Alaska where her beloved twin met his end. Ostensively, to gather her brothers things and close down his apartment. Realistically? To find out what really happened to her brother. Everyone is hiding things. Everyone apparently knows things she doesn’t. And they have no intention of telling her anything – or of helping her in any way. Go Home, Little Girl. Nobody wants you here.

Like. Hell. Solina is afraid, sure. She is, by nature, passive. A homebody who spends her time working in her parent’s bakery, kowtowing to their every wish. She has always left her twin, Mani, to be the adventurous one, the one who allowed her to live vicariously through his actions. But now, Mani is dead, and Solina is meeting obstacles every way she turns. Mani’s boss, Thorin, is a cold, unwielding jerk, belittling and demeaning in word and action. Val, on the other hand, is a Player, in all forms of the word. He was Mani’s best friend, and helped Solina though the first few months after Mani’s death.

Solina Mundy lost her brother four months ago, and she is heading to Alaska to deal with his belongs, and look into his death. When she gets there, she finds his friends don't share her desire to solve the mystery except for one, Skyla. Both Skyla and Solina, are determined to get to the bottom of Mani's death in spite of Val, the over-enthusiastic would-be lover of Solina, and Thorin, the seemingly quiet boss of Mani. The two men act like Mani's death was a tragic happenstance rather than a violent end, deserving of investigation.

Dreams have haunted Solina, and she discovers her own life tied to her twin's in more ways than expected. Soon she finds she is in over her head as things take an unexpected turn.

From the first page I was hooked, and as the story delved deeper into the mystery of Mani's death, I found myself drawn into the characters and their lives. Solina is strong, funny, and independent, when away from her family. She gets rescued, but she also takes care of herself; it's a give and take. All of the characters have flaws, and no one is simply a perfect being, or so beautiful it hurts, as you find so often in stories like this. I love that about this story. The beauty of the characters comes from getting to know them, much like getting to know people in real life. Sure, some are outwardly beautiful, but they are inwardly beautiful once you get to know them; much like real life.

Additionally, I love that there is a touch of romance in this book, but it doesn't hit you over the head. It felt real because there are subtitles and complications, but no real 'hit you over the head' moments. I realize many people use books to escape, and I can guarantee that while being realistic in its timeline, this book should have you feeling excitement for the blooming love interest. No one falls in love in one day, thankfully.

There is a lot of tension in this book, and the action, and pace are well balanced; I had a hard time putting the book down. In fact, I don't think I did. This book was a one day read for me, which is saying something because I'm insanely busy! It's ok though, that homework I was supposed to be doing will get done...eventually.

Life may be seemingly mundane in the beginning, but it takes on a Nordic mythological twist [much like the series title "Norse Chronicles" suggests]. Karissa weaves the old fables into current times, and I think it's where she shines the brightest. I'd love to expound, but I fear it would spoil things. Suffice it to say; it's a great read and worth all five stars I've given it.

Really must stop buying books that are part of a series not yet finished...lol. I am not a very patient type.

That said, I will absolutely buy the next book. I found this well written, even if the lead seemed able to swallow a complete turn around of her personal world view, in just under two weeks. This is fiction, after all. I rolled with it, because I enjoyed the plot.

Recommended for anyone who can let themselves enjoy a good story.

I wish we could give fractional star ratings because this book was more than a 3 but not quite a 4 star. It was cute, clever, and had a good pace. But I'm not really sure I liked any of the characters that much. Oh well, I guess I'll have to see if that changes in the next book of this series.
5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh voice setting fire to old tropes! Fast-paced and fresh. 24 July 2015

What do I even say about Midnight Burning, except I WANT THE NEXT BOOK NOW PLEASE. It's a page-turner from start to finish: well-paced, clever (but not smug about it), and unique in its choice of settings and characters. Every chapter flips tired tropes on their heads. Gone is the whitewashed world, the formulaic romance, the knight in shining armor. Midnight Burning dares to put a flawed woman in the hero's spot and it pays off in spades.

One of my favorite things about the book is that in between the fighting and politicking and maneuvering, it even explores the fragility of masculinity and resultant social expectations. This is addressed consistently throughout the book, and Solina never minces words about it. She tolerates none of what we've come to expect as standard when romance is even remotely involved, but Midnight Burning doesn't shove her into the ice princess/cold b*tch corner along with so many other leading ladies. She's allowed dignity and independence as well as sexuality and longing. It's really a beautiful balance to see.
5.0 out of 5 stars A very good first book! 19 September 2015

The author takes a new and interesting take on a popular subject. What the subject is I won't say because I don't want to ruin any of the surprises. I really did like this book. It seems more for a younger crowd, but was still enjoyable by us older folks. It's kind of hard to write a review about this book because one doesn't want to give away anything. The story is about a young woman who goes to Alaska to clean out her murdered brother's apartment. She wants to find out about his murder and runs into a lot of resistance. During the course of pursuing leads of his murder, she finds out that she has a special power. She meets some people who try to help her develop and control her power, while hiding from those who want to kill her because of it. As I told Karissa, the only problem I had with this book is the fact that this is her first book, and now I have a wait to find out what happens. Can't wait for your next book Karissa!
