I found the second book even better than the first.
It was a fun read that kept me entertained and offered an escape from the current stressors of being an essential worker during a pandemic. I can’t wait for the next book due for release in May.
Thanks Shannon Mayer, your books are essential to me!
Bree is my spirit animal!! I wanna be her when I grow up.
This is the first series that I've read where the MC is over her early 30s (41) it is such a nice refreshing change and I love it!!
She has confidence, wisdom and self awareness that comes with ugh, dare I say it...age.
I love how she navigates her way through the shadow world and the relationships she creates within it and even the enemies. She is sassy, straight talking and her menopausal libido is hilarious, but I mean accurate.
I discovered Shannon 3 days ago through Kelly St Clare who she is co-authoring with Shannon in an upcoming series (excited is an understatment) and yes I have just finished book two in the series and yes, you best believe I am starting number 3 as soon as I finish this review.
Highly recommend this series if you are into sassy boss MCs, hot bad boys with a grey moral compass, awesome support ensemble, and all the awesomeness that is paranormal. If the above tickles your fancy, hurry up and start reading. Seriously.

This second book in the Forty-Proof series starts five days after book one, and though you don’t have to have read that, it enriches this one if you have.
Breena is a middle aged misfit, recently moved to her hometown of Savannah after twenty years, to try and get back her dead granny’s house that her ex husband stole from her whilst Bree was incarcerated in a mental health institute he’d put her in - because she could see things that don’t exist - according to ‘Himself’. The ex.
He gaslighted her, emotionally abused her and still won’t let her live life now they’re divorced. And to be honest he’s a weakly weasle of a man with a superiority complex - don’t worry, he’ll get his ‘reward’ as due.
There’s magic in Savannah and Bree now believes in it.
She’s smart, can fight, tell off werewolves and is not afraid to own her mature, burgeoning hormones and man-crushes.
Add in the fact she is a kick-ass, snarky forty-plus woman with curves and baggage - who adopts people wherever she goes - it’s a very fun read. And I love that #PWF is a new emerging sub genre - about time too.
I can also relate to the hot flashes.
Holy Hell this was fab and I know some future bad guys I think; enough bread crumbs and red herrings left scattered to form book three.
So many things were answered in this one; why Crash * a very hot, dubious smith * is, well, complicated, the why of Sarge’s aggression, the importance of the house and - what you really do with boy butter.
Those scenes. OMG I laughed so hard at this.
To top it off, the ‘supporting cast’ includes her ex’s cousin Corb, ridiculously hot and young, a water maid Feish, who looks more than a bit like a fish, Eric the gentle shapeshifter’Bigfoot’ who bakes and gardens, and a wobbly dead skeleton called Robert, and this ensemble rocks.
There’s plenty of tension, action, emotion, laughter and surprises to be had.
I absolutely loved this.
Now go buy it.
Story continues where it finished in first book and it's non stop action packed, full with dangerous twists and craziness. Can't wait for the next book in this series! I highly recommend this series to everyone, no matter how old you're.
