Franz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague, where he lived most of his life. During his lifetime, he published only a few short stories, including “The Metamorphosis,” “The Judgment,” and “The Stoker.” He died in 1924, before completing any of his full-length novels. At the end of his life, Kafka asked his lifelong friend and literary executor Max Brod to burn all his unpublished work. Brod overrode those wishes.

-------

If you are wondering what the term Metamorphosis mens, as I wondered when I picked up the book, it is a biological sequence of an animal developing its body after birth. Like a butterfly, how it gets transferred from a pupa to a whole butterfly.

The story is about this person called Gregor Samsa. He is a travelling salesman, who lives with his parents and a teen sister. One day he wakes up and finds himself turned out be a horrible vermin. He finds even difficult to move this body from the bed. Suspicious parents and a person from his work, urge him to get out of the room. When Gregor manages to step out in his new form, everyone gets terrified and push him back to the room.

From that day, Gregor stays in his room helpless. In the beginning his sister helps him by providing him food. But when the days go, everyone gets busy in their own daily life. His family takes away all his belongings and leave him with an empty room.

This is a very simple story, yet it conveys so many deep meanings. We see how his boss treats even after working so hard for many years! His parents consider him only when he earns money for the family. Gregor lives a very sad life even before him becoming a vermin.

The story also leaves with no explanation of why he turned into a vermin. This makes our imagination go wild in metaphorically comparing things.

Overall, it's a different kind of reading, which definitely needs to be read to enjoy it's deep meaning.

The travelling salesman Samsa transformed into a horrible vermin without any explanation or warning before hand. His life took a unexplainable turn as he's is no more able to go out and continue his life as a human again. His dreams and his plans starts shattering right before his eyes. But in this he's not alone who is suffering...his family along side with him went through the horrible experience of his unexplained, unfathomable metamorphosis.

This story gives you a whole new perception on the question of existence!
How doe you matter to your family, to your society to your loved ones?
