Photo.... I quickly wore holes in the first pair... and had to fill the holes with 'Shoe Goo' to get more miles.
The second pair is just basically disintegrating... but I still walk 4 miles a day in them. The third pair were the only decent looking style but a case of sciatica prevents me from using them as much since they seem to exaggerate my 'foot flop'.
Now... this Trail Glove 4 is without a doubt the most UNCOMFORTABLE Merrell shoe I have ever allowed near my feet. After trying them on for 5 minutes walking around the house, I could not wait to free my feet! I ordered the size 12 as always and these feel like I am wearing a size smaller. They are narrow, the new.. one sided tongue design exerts a gripping pressure around the body of the foot. The toe box is only big enough for 4 of my toes!
I do notice that I am among the contrarians on this shoe... and so take that into account. But coming from a Merrell Fanboy.... I am very disappointed with the fit on this pair of shoes.
In my opinion... Merrell's got some UGLY shoes. But I don't even care about that if the dang things feel good on my feet. These don't !
As for the other design details of the shoe: yes the toe box is relatively wide compared to other TG generations. They are also grippier and they absorb more of the impact shock, without sacrificing stability. So, if you like feeling all the small stones digging into your foot, be aware that the TG4s are more buffered. Personally, I welcome this, as I was taking a beating on fast descents, with previous TGs, which I still liked, very much. And finally, while these shoes are made for stomping the trails, they will also work well for every day walks, commutes, etc. We have kept our feet very separated from the ground for generations. I have no doubt that the minimal sole concept is a move in the right direction and Merrell has the best min sole / zero rise formula that I have tried.
I hope that this is helpful...!
To be blunt, I wasn't confident in this shoe. I had never worn a minimalist-type shoe before and thought I'd roll my ankles or it would slip off. I thought that the material would fall apart after their first run through a puddle or river and that I'd feel every rock under my feet.
I was HAPPILY mistaken.
I live in a small Alaskan town that promotes its various mountain/lake trails that vary from muddy-maintained trails to hiking up and jumping from rock to rock to make it across rivers and up mountain sides.
Where at first I thought this shoe would slide off because of how it fits right at your ankle, I found that the name "glove" really is fitting as this sucker wasn't moving a millimeter. I couldn't feel any of the rocks under my feet and most importantly they were super light and offered good support due to the Vibram sole.
With being a "glove" it really does envelop your foot and if you're worried about ordering for size, I wear a 10.5 in every shoe I've worn from New Balance to Nike runners/joggers and I wear the same for this shoe. I think the complaints about size come from peoples socks they wear as that adds bulk as well as how their feet spread-out when they step. I really can ONLY wear thin-socks with these shoes, but that's fine with me as I'm not going to be wearing these in the winter.
As far as trail running goes, I like more substantial shoes with greater stability but for my uses, these are wonderful.
