This is a fantastic book! My sister (who is in medical school) recommended this book as she was looking for ways to help remember the massive amount of information she was studying in preparation for exams. I am a University teacher so I'm always curious about tools students use to help them in their studies. I read the book in a couple of days because a bunch of light bulbs went off in my mind about how I could apply her research (for my teaching, to help my students, and also for my own personal use) and wanted to ingest it as quickly as possible!
The book is written in a very personal way, almost as a travelogue. She shows us how she came to each mnemonic strategy and how she uncovered their individual histories. My main take away is that humans have been using different strategies to remember names, places, events, cultural histories, etc, for thousands of years, and that learning these methods was essentially an important part of every person's education, regardless of culture, up until very, very recently. Why have we stopped learning and teaching these techniques that proved so useful for most of human civilization?!
For all those reasons, this book was well worth the price and my time. It really opened my eyes and made me want to do more research on a topic that I had virtually no interest in whatsoever when I began. A minor criticism however would be that the book isn't particularly useful for anyone who already knows about this history and is looking for step-by-step instruction on how to use the techniques. She does explain how she does it through anecdotes and there are some very helpful lists in the notes, but I wouldn't say the strategies are laid out in a way that would make quick reference easy or even possible.

A cut above the usual memory improvement book
Reviewed in the United States on 20 April 2020Verified Purchase
This is a book abut how to improve your memory, but it is far better than other books on this topic for several reasons: (1) it explains many more techniques than you'll find in the average book on memory improvement, and this makes it more likely that you will find something that really works for you; (2) it explains where these techniques come from and their purpose, which makes the book quite interesting; and (3) through sharing her own experiences in using the techniques, the author gives them a human face and so makes this an inspirational book to read (even if you don't intend to learn the techniques). So instead of the book being rather dry (like other books in this genre tend to be), this one is practical, interesting and inspirational. Anyone interested in the use and improvement will find this book valuable.

Put Away Your Phone and Unlock the Power of Your Mind
Reviewed in the United States on 21 February 2021Verified Purchase
Kelly follows up her excellent The Memory Code with Memory Craft. The former book focused on the history of our ancestors, who unlocked the power of the mind. Before written language they could transmit encyclopedic information over generations. They weren't primitive, they had the same minds as us. In Memory Craft, Kelly shows these techniques and knowledge were still alive well into Renaissance. Now, in our modern age, we erode our minds by relying on our gadgets to do our thinking. Kelly details the techniques, which she has personally proven out, and how readers can learn them. This is about training your mind to its full potential. Check out The Memory Code as well. For more on our ancestor's superior mental abilities, see O'Conner's Wayfinding, and Bond's From Here to There. Our brain's inherent navigation skill is closely related to the memory abilities Kelly discusses.

Overall a good book

There are times this book can be a little dull, but overall an excellent read. What counted to me was seeing all the ways I can use my memory places. I wish more people would teach this way. Most people tell you one way but never let you know all the different ways to make this work for you.
I am delighted that I bought the book.
My school days are long past now, but I still see how this can be useful. If I had known how to do this when going to college, I might not have had to kill myself during midterms and finals. lol
