This one was kind of hit and miss for me. For starters, the wrong male name is in the blurb above and there was a scene with Sarah (the McKellan mum) with her three boys, Violet and Jason's bride-to-be Celine all talking in a room at McKellan's Run, then a couple of chapters later Violet is talking to Mac about being anxious because she hasn't seen Jason for nearly eight years and has no idea what his fiancée might be like.
There was also a little confusion for me as to the make-up of the McKellan family. Earlier in the story it was stated that Jason (the eldest brother) was Sarah's from a previous marriage and John McKellan had adopted him and made him one of his own (no ages were referenced to gauge timeframe). Then a step-mother was mentioned, and near the end of the book there is a flashback to John McKellan's deathbed conversations (he does not appear in the book at all) and he mentions loving two women who provided him with three sons. A further reference reveals that Sarah was step-mother to Charlie and the youngest brother Dan.
The storyline plays out well, aside from those minor hiccups, but there were a couple of places where I didn't quite believe the actions were typical of the characters - like when Mac takes Violet on their motorbike ride. She also jumps on and off the back of the bike easily and regularly, despite that fact that she's wearing a skirt - and then once they reach their destination...
Overall, it was a fair read. It has the requisite HEA and is a sweet read, but proper editing and an accurate timeline could have made it a lot more.
Mac McKellan used to be Violet's best friend. He wanted them to be more, but his older brother was the lucky one who was Violet's boyfriend. He's happy she's back and glad he has the chance to get to know her again. He liked her back then and he likes her now, but he isn't sure he has a chance with Violet. Especially not after what his brother did to her...
Mac owns McKellan's Run and he's good at what he does, he's dedicated to the farm that has been in his family for generations and wants to make it the best it can be. He knows his heart and lives with passion. I liked that a lot, it makes him a great main character. I also loved reading about Violet. She never gives up, she's unbelievably strong and she takes good care of the people she loves. They are the ideal main characters and they made me enjoy this story very much.
McKellan's run is an ideal setting for a romantic story. I loved the small town and the family histories. Violet Falls is a wonderful place to read about. I loved the atmosphere and read most of this story with a smile on my face. I read it in one sitting, because I didn't want to put it down before I knew if Violet and Mac would get there happy ending. If you're looking for a great romantic story that will lift your spirits McKellan's Run is definitely the right book for you.
