Product description

Product Description

When you love someone, how does it feel? And when you desire someone, how is it different?

In Mating in Captivity, Esther Perel looks at the story of sex in committed couples. Modern romance promises it all - a lifetime of togetherness, intimacy and erotic desire. In reality, it's hard to want what you already have. Our quest for secure love conflicts with our pursuit of passion. And often, the very thing that got us to into our relationships - lust - is the one thing that goes missing from them.

Determined to reconcile the erotic and the domestic, Perel explains why democracy is a passion killer in the bedroom. Argues for playfulness, distance, and uncertainty. And shows what it takes to bring lust home. Smart, sexy and explosively original, Mating in Captivity is the monogamist's essential bedside read.

I was curious to learn how to keep passion alive in a marriage and if it could be done. I learned about sexual and intimacy compatibility and why that's important. I know this book will change the way I approach my marriage, for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! 19 January 2017

The best advice I've ever read about long term relationships. She doesn't talk down to women--because some books do pretty much blame a woman for everything. This writer includes both men and women in taking responsibility. She gives great advice on how to keep romance alive. The other good book I read was "Come as You Are", but I like this one even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars bought three; handed them out like Bible tracts 17 June 2014
By Dan E. Nicholas - Published on Amazon.com

Got to this book late and am I glad for it. When it came out I was newly remarried and didn't need and wouldn't have heard the message. But seven years into a mid-life marriage I needed tips on answering Ester Perel's Big Question (from her excellent TED Talk): Can you want what you already have? Her answer seemed to be as I read: Sure you can. But it's work. And you better understand what's going on first.

Add to this that my whole arousal system of mind, body, soul and sex is older, as I'm in my mid 60s. Love what she said when asked how many times she'd been married: "Four. To the same man." This woman and mom and wife and therapist and speaker of 6 languages not only reinvented herself to stay hot for her man but to stay interesting for her two teen children living with mom/dad as a foursome. Yes, sex as a family value. From Belgium and Israel, her husband and two kids live or lived together when she wrote this from their flat in NYC. It's one thing to write how to stay hot for each other while married; it's another to pull it off and then even be able to communicate the complex system that makes it possible.

I gave one to a peer guy friend and one to my son. It's that good and helpful. They say when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Don't read this book too soon. Or too late either. But buy three copies and get ready. I say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changed my life, my work and my own writing. 9 September 2016

This book literally changed my life. As a therapist it's transformed my work with couples (and all relationship paradigms) and as a man who believes that multiple loving relationships are possible (and has had them), "Mating in Captivity" has helped my guide my own loving, and erotic life with those I choose to be intimate with for the long haul. Esther's no-nonsense voice, brilliant multi-cultural lens, and incisive mind come together to make this book a classic, not just in the field of couples work, but far beyond that.

5.0 out of 5 stars specifically how love and desire work 23 August 2015

Worth every penny! Buy it! Read it! A fresh and profoundly different way of looking at relationships, specifically how love and desire work. Much of it flies in the face of traditional counseling/advice, but it all rings true to me based on my personal experiences/relationships. I plan to give this book to each of my son's when they go off to college. Hopefully, they'll be more enlightened/wise about relationships at an earlier age.
4.0 out of 5 stars This book was great, and I was looking forward to sharing it ... 14 May 2017

This book was great, and I was looking forward to sharing it with my husband to read on his own Kindle, then comparing notes. Unfortunately, that action is NOT available for this book. I cannot tell you how annoying that was, and it's either going to put me in the position of having to give up my own device for him to read it (and possibly clear my own notes until we can go over them together), or put another $12 in the author's pocket. Another hurdle to mating in captivity. Not particularly nice.
