Wingman rule number one: don’t fall for a client.

After a career-ending accident, former NFL recruit Ian Hunter is back on campus—and he’s ready to get his new game on. As one of the masterminds behind Wingmen, Inc., a successful and secretive word-of-mouth dating service, he’s putting his extensive skills with women to work for the lovelorn. But when Blake Olson requests the services of Wingmen, Inc., Ian may have landed his most hopeless client yet.

From her frumpy athletic gear to her unfortunate choice of footwear, Blake is going to need a miracle if she wants to land her crush. At least with a professional matchmaker by her side she has a fighting chance. Ian knows that his advice and a makeover can turn Blake into another successful match. But as Blake begins the transformation from hot mess to smokin’ hot, Ian realizes he’s in danger of breaking his cardinal rule…

Really enjoyed this book. It was something different to all the usual college books. The characters were great, the dialogue witty and it is definitely a highly recommended from me.

I have adored everything I have read to date from Ms Van Dyken, and The Matchmaker's Playbook is no exception.

Ian Hunter is a wingman - teaching women the tricks of the trade to get the man that they want.

And he is good at it.

Then he meets Blake Hensley. She is the complete opposite to him, more tomboy than woman - and he finds her irrestistible!

Oh how I adore Blake. 1992 called and wants their scrunchies back! I couldn't help but fall for her dorkiness, he cluelessness to how wonderful she is.

There were plenty of laugh out loud moments, but there were also plenty of deeper, sentimental and emotional moments.

The Matchmaker's Playbook is a funny, unique love story - Ms Van Dyken does good rom-com!

There are some great secondary stories, particularly Lex and Gabi - Ian's two best friends. They bicker like nobody's business, but you can feel that spark between them. Things are going to be explosive if they get their act together!

Ms Van Dyken just has that knack with whatever genre she is writing at the time - from rom-com, to mafia to vampires. I am drawn in each and every time.

Can't wait for more in the Wingmen series.

This was my first Rachel Van Dyken book and I simply loved it. The Matchmaker's Playbook was book 1 of a series, and book 2 is out soon.
I had been reading my fair share of dry, non-fiction books and angsty fiction novels, lately. So, if like me, you need a break, this could be the book for you.
I found it to be wonderfully written, full of sexy moments, funny and it had a 'different to the norm' romantic plot. The characters were well-developed and the pacing had a good flow. It was told through Ian's POV which was a little different and made for interesting reading.
The brief scenario....Ian was an injured ex-footballer who had to face a life minus the sport he loved. He co-created a venture when he arrived back at college. The venture - Wingman Inc. was a secret dating service for women who needed a little help to 'land' their dream guy.
Enter Blake, a challenging client, indeed! Ok, it gets a teenie-weenie bit 'Hitch meets My Fair Lady' at times, but it has many differences, too, making it a page-turner.
Ian was conceited, crude, brash and brutally honest. His comments made me chuckle. Surprisingly, he was also up-front and generous. Blake was the shy, ugly duckling, but she was strong minded and a pretty smart cookie. There were secondary characters, too - Lex, Ian's business partner and Gabi, Ian's longtime friend, shared hilarious banter. They feature in book 2.
I recommend this book to readers who like the light, romcom genre...it's a real winner!

***This is an honest review. I have never accepted freebies and pay for all my own books ☺

Ian Hunter is in the business of making girls happy. At first blush that might make him sound like a bit of a player, and he is, but that's not the business. For him that's play. Business is about helping girls, girls that need that little bit of help, find their happily ever after. Together with his best friend Lex, he provides a matchmaking service like no other, helping girls snag the man of their dreams, helping them understand, and be, the kind of girl that can both catch the attentions of the object of their desires, and keep it.

At heart, he's a good guy, and doesn't want any girl to 'settle', at least not when it means settling for less than something that will bring her true happiness, which is also partly why he's the player I mentioned earlier. As much as he's rather full of himself, he doesn't see himself as the kind of person who could make any girl truly happy.

Ian's newest client, Blake, has her heart set on David (not me, another David) and she needs help to get his attention. A LOT of help, but as Ian sets about doing his thing, he starts to realize that underneath, there's an awful lot to work with, and maybe, after helping all these girls get the man of their dreams he doesn't want Blake to get the man of hers.

Of course that would be breaking the rules.

Unusually for a romance novel, The Matchmaker's Playbook by Rachel Van Dyken is told exclusively from the Hero's POV, and is absolutely hilarious, right from the first page. The chemistry between Ian and Blake is off the charts, and the love/hate relationship going on in the background between Lex and Gabi (Ian's other best friend and Blake's new roommate) is fascinating.

This was my Saturday read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love Rachel's characters and their witty comebacks and hilarious internal dialogues. Rachel must have done a lot of research on this one because the Ian Hunter's playbook and rules always made sense. The outcomes are the most likely that would happen with the scenarios taking place. No wonder Wingmen, Inc had such a high success rate. These 2 guys were just geniuses. Alas, in the end, the player is the one being played. I love it when tables are turned and the player gets a taste of his own medicine. I can't wait to read the next one about Gabi and Lex.
