Masked Prey: Lucas Davenport 29 Hardcover – 1 June 2020
Enhance your purchase
Lucas Davenport investigates an anonymous threat to the children of US politicians in the latest thriller from the internationally bestselling author John Sandford.
The daughter of a US Senator is monitoring her social media presence when she finds a picture of herself on a strange blog. And there are other pictures . . . children of other influential Washington politicians, walking or standing outside their schools, each identified by name. Surrounding the photos are vicious political rants from a variety of radical groups.
It's obviously alarming – is there an unstable extremist tracking the loved ones of powerful politicians with deadly intent? But when the FBI is called in, there isn't much they can do. The anonymous photographer can't be pinned down to one location or IP address and, more importantly, no crime has actually been committed. Yet.
There’s only one person who has a hope of finding the person behind this, one person who can operate outside the FBI's constraints: Lucas Davenport. And he’ll have to act first before someone gets hurt . . .

Oh, dear, how sad, never mind. Pass the potatoes, granny.
Whichever way you look at it, all writing, especially fiction, is political in one form or another. To my way of thinking, therefore, Sandford has every right to use his literary expertise to take a swipe at any organisation and establishment figure whose philosophy he doesn't agree with. In this case, that happens to be the coterie of right wing extremist groups that inhabit American society. They're usually the ones with the guns. Which means, as far as the US is concerned, Sandford has also managed to alienate members of the NRA, that bastion of civil liberty beloved of the current occupant of the White House and his acolytes in the GOP.
I should add, of course, that the First Amendment gives readers every right to say that they consider Sandford's book to be, as one enraged reviewer has put it: 'progressive drivel'. While one of my fellow Brits has accused it of dealing with a 'subject matter that was not acceptable'. No, me neither. Haven't a clue.
Anyway, I thought I'd get my two pence (heh heh) worth in.
Frankly, after thirty Prey novels, I'm astonished that Sandford has taken this long to employ the above tactic. God knows, the Republican Party, survivalists, the NRA, and every gun nut in the US have given him enough....wait for it...ammunition for a dozen novels.
Ah, yes, but all that aside, is the book any good?
Well put it this way, how Sandford has managed to maintain this standard of excellence throughout his fifty plus novels is beyond me. Well, there was that one blip in the Virgil Flowers offering - Storm Front – but the less said about that, the better.
What matters is that the author has established Lucas Davenport as one of the most charismatic cops in crime fiction. Add that to the mix of clever plotting, whip-smart dialogue and secondary characters that are just as compelling, and the author has, in my book (sorry about that), gained himself another winner.
Roll on the next.
ps..note to Amazon. It could be just me, but by including US reviews on the UK site, you're not doing your UK readers any favours. At the time of writing, the US site has upwards of 2200 reviews for this novel. The UK site has 520, which includes, presumably, those 'Top International Reviews' - meaning the ones cribbed from the USA site. Please let us make our own minds up. If we want to read what someone on Amazon.com thinks, we can head over there ourselves. We have the address.
pps. According to the author's own website, this is Davenport 30, not 29, Just saying.
