Product Description

From the award-winning author of The Summer Bride comes the first in a charming new historical romance series where marriages of convenience turn into true love matches.

Major Calbourne Rutherford returns to England on the trail of an assassin, only to find he’s become Lord Ashendon, with the responsibility for vast estates and dependent relatives. Cal can command the toughest of men, but his wild half-sisters are quite another matter. They might just be his undoing.

When he discovers that Miss Emmaline Westwood, the girls’ former teacher, guides them with ease, Cal offers her a marriage of convenience. But strong-minded and independent Emm is neither as compliant nor as proper as he expected, and Cal finds himself most inconveniently seduced by his convenient wife.

Emm knows they didn’t marry for love, yet beneath her husband’s austere facade, she catches glimpses of a man who takes her breath away. As pride, duty and passion clash, will these two stubborn hearts find more than they ever dreamed of?

With marvellous imagery and characters that feel so real you'd swear they'd walked off the page and were standing in your own living room, Marry In Haste is an absolute delight.
Much of this story is light and humorous and the dialogue sparkles. From acerbic Aunt Agatha to petulant Rose, defiant George and Lilly, who has the power to weep at will, it is clear that poor Cal truly has his hands full trying to cope with the women in his life. It is equally clear that author Anne Gracie must have chuckled her way through many of the scenes in this book. I certainly did!
This is not just a light and humorous story however. Anne Gracie has used this story as a window into life in Regency England, and it's not all pretty. Emm's reflection on Cal's reaction to her not being a virgin demonstrates the prevalent double standards of the time. "Life was so unfair. He'd lain with probably dozens of women and she'd lain with one man nearly ten years ago yet she was the sinner." Later in the story Cal reflects on the poor treatment of soldiers returned to England after the war.
This story is beautifully balanced, moving effortlessly from witty repartee to more serious scenes and back. I couldn't put it down. It's one of the very best books I've ever read.

Marry in Haste is fantastic. I was in a reading slump and this turned up. I devoured it. Funny, sweet and full of the most wonderful cast of characters. Cal is so out of his depth with his sisters, Lily and Rose. Add in George and the poor man has no hope. He may be able to order men around a battlefield but he has no gentle touch for girls needing love. He recognises skills, and Emm has exactly the skills he requires. Emm and Cal are a great match, their road to love is slow, rocky, but very believable. I loved this family and the link to the gorgeous Daisy Chance. Make haste with the next book, please!
