Book 1 of this series wrapped up its main story, yet ended with a cliffhanger, which was now addressed in this volume. I'll admit I was nearly discouraged by the seemingly slow pace at the start, and by the realization that Book 2 would be longer than the original, yet my diligence was rewarded. What I liked most about this novel was how it reacquainted me -- via the title character and her family -- with expectations among my own prominently Mexican-American relatives, in regards to a traditional wedding. It was such traditions that comprised the "checklist" this time.
Just like the original, Book 2 is really for an adult audience -- specifically readers open to some highly charged sex scenes. Interactions between the narrator and her beau were the highlight in this regard. The difference this time is that such scenes nearly took a back seat to other details and dramas -- emphasis on "nearly." Just about everyone introduced in the original returned, except now the narrative leaped back and forth between the present (elaborating on the families of the narrator and her guy) and just a few years prior (offering some background to the characters outside of Book 1's awkward revelations).
My main critique is that several typos regrettably missed the editing process. That aside, I was impressed how much more relatable the characters became (compared to how they came across in Book 1). True, there were moments when I wanted to yell at the narrator, "What do you think you're doing?" But this was due to an inner conflict of hers, which many folks likely can empathize with. By the way, one character lamented her own weak "gaydar" -- this, I must confess, offered me a bit of encouragement, seeing how I ended up unexpectedly better able to pick up hints of a developing subplot.
