I had heard of Margot Asquith but didn't know why, I only knew it was from English politics somehow. I'm glad I went in with no knowledge, I felt like, through the book, I was getting to know her slowly. This book, while usually interesting, was in some ways unsatisfying. She skipped meeting her husband and marrying him, and their "interesting" marriage, which I found out about after I finished the book and Googled her. In fact, she skipped enormous chunks of what would have been very interesting, particularly her husband's Prime Ministership, yet talked about hound hunting in minute detail. I didn't find her silly or self absorbed, as some reviewers said at the time the book was first published (which I though was a bit mean and cruel), but I would never describe her as someone with poor self esteem!
I enjoyed this book and was sorry when it ended. If you enjoy reading about a different way of life, lived in a very different time to ours, then you should enjoy this book.
