By all means read the first six or seven Banks books, but don't bother with the rest.
One of Robinson's best books was a stand-alone, early in his career, called Caedmon's Song, written after his first few Banks novels.
This novel is the tawdriest and yet the most PC yet. Robinson has decreed that almost all of the characters not be men, and so it has come to pass.
Still, worth a read. Expect a new book about Albanian drug dealers.
