Enlightening, Bothersome and More Personal Accountability Needed.

This book provided detailed insights on the backdrop of the docudrama DC Thug Life. I always wanted to know what happened to the little boy in the crowd. It was devastating to read about the crimes this child committed and the wasted opportunities. This young man was smart, he attended a Harvard Prep program for a brief time and he had a strong and professional mother. He also have Islam influence during the age of Black Power movement; yet he chose to hang with gang bangers and to sell drugs. It was also sad to read about his inability to take full responsibility for his actions. Personal behaviors were blamed on his crack addict father, the conditions in DC at the time and society as a whole. For example he explained the incident involving shooting two youth in a playground. The author explained that the people were 17 years old and the shooting was in retaliation to the boys shooting at him. However a 17 year old is still a child and two wrongs dont make a right - he still shot in a playground in which other children could have been harmed. The aiding and abiding charge received too much time; however the justice system was seeking to get this child off the streets due to the dangers he possessed. Society and the justice system want to see a person take full responsibility for their actions; otherwise prison release will be blocked on a consistent basis. When humans don't take responsibility for their actions, they become angry and are at risk of re-offending. I'm delighted that this man is making effective use of his time via writing books and mentoring other inmates. It was also nice to see his growth during the years; specifically in being unselfish and not wanting to marry in his present state. Inmates who consistently seek relationships outside the gate are often emotionally and psychologically abusive and very selfish - pulling the person into psychological incarceration which causes friction. I've also seen inmates who've used women during their incarceration only to drop and devastate her once released.

This young man is a great writer. His talents are astonishing, given any situation. The story he tells seems to be a little lost on some of the other people who submitted reviews. He is an excellent storyteller. His story is the same for many of us. We are all products of environments. Our judicial system is dysfunctional to say the least. Youngsters growing up in so-called intact families can face his exact plight. There by the grace of God goes us all. Many young usually white affluent people break the law are able to go home. So the judgment of what Mr. Flowers did or did not do, is a huge oversight of the system that allows some do whatever and go to rehab centers or home, while others are tortured and treated worse than crazed animals. His mother was professional but she was not wealthy and he is black. I am in no way condoning Mr. Flowers' behavior. However, he was a child and children cannot be adults in their thinking or perception of the world. Adults should stop trying to make a child's mind the same as an adult’s. Most adults would not fare well given what in which he had to deal. I do agree taking responsibility for ones thoughts actions and deed is imperative. Nevertheless, an even bigger part of taking responsibility is not to take on other folk’s responsibilities and faults. We have a political and judicial systems set up to make certain groups fail. Lastly, No child should be condemned to a hellhole for life. Not even the one who ran down my son and killed him. Anyone can mouthed contrition. Our truthful actions make us free.
