Magnificent Obsession is a 1929 novel by Lloyd C. Douglas. It was one of four of his books that were eventually made into blockbuster motion pictures, the other three being The Robe, White Banners and The Big Fisherman.

Robert Merrick is resuscitated by a rescue crew after a boating accident. The crew is thus unable to save the life of Dr. Hudson, a doctor renowned for his ability to help people, who was having a heart attack at the same time on the other side of the lake. Merrick then decides to devote his life to making up for the doctor's, and becomes a physician himself.

This brilliant story by Lloyd Douglas is still powerful. It explores the value of secret service to others. I re-read it today in one sitting. A best seller from 1929 it's also available as a DVD movie on Amazon.

I have read this book at least 4 times over the past 45 years. Each time I walk away with something new. I have my original copy but it is so yellowed and in such small print I purchased the Kindle edition for a reread. Somehow I still can't bring myself to part with the original. I am not particularly religious, in a traditional sense, but am into energy healing. I think having found the deeper spiritual connection necessary for healing is what keeps me coming back to this book. One needs a fair command of the English language to appreciate it - I suspect many will put it down before completion. It's message is very simple but may encourage some to further examine both their own beliefs and actions.
