Out of all the Kate Daniels books I found this one the best. Kate really comes into her own in this. There is a lot of build up through books 1- 6 about what would happen when Kate finally meets her father. All books previous to Magic Breaks allude to The Battle to end All Battles when they come face to face. You've probably envisioned scenarios ranging from a massacre of everyone she loves, an epic battle where she dies, she decides to join him and turns evil...the list goes on and on. Kate is so gung-ho to protect those she loves to the point where she would rather sacrifice herself that you'd never guess what happens.
Curran as Beast Lord, must go away for awhile and do Lord things so Kate is left nominally in charge of the welfare of the Pack. While Curran is gone, Hugh D'Ambray returns and orchestrates a murder that puts the People and the Pack at odds. Set up as a trap to try and lure Kate within clutching distance, that ends with the entire chapter of the Knights of Merciful Aid lying dead and bloody and Kate and her friends injured and locked in cages. With the threat of war looming and Kate being forced to turn over the shapeshifter responsible for the murder, there are some tough decisions to be made. Worried that something has happened to Curran, Kate and Jim meet the horde of vampires sent to their front gate to apprehend the murderer. As tensions mount - Curran finally shows up just as Kate is betrayed by one of the Pack and is teleported away to her fathers max security prison.
Curran and Andrea along with a few others manage to rescue Kate and Ghastek 7 days later. A nightmare journey in the heart of vampire cannibal land, a terrifying meeting with her grandmother, an anti climactic face to face meeting with Roland and a huge magical coup later and then book ends leaving me with so many questions I don't know what to do with! In the end this book signifies a turning point. Previous books for Kate have always focused on achieving a goal oriented to help someone else deal with their issues in some way. Magic Breaks focuses solely on Kate and her struggle to be who she wants to be and not what she was made to be.
Thumbs up guys!
