Oxford is a city of two halves — town and gown. In the town, you have Cornmarket street full of shops and shoppers that could be found in any city in the country. But Oxford's 'dreaming spires' are the real draw for the tourists, romantics and those with intellectual aspirations to wear the gowns of students and dons. In centuries-old quads, croquet can still be played on lawns as smooth as velvet. Here, 'New' College's walls are actually over 500 years old, and Cotswold stone gleams in even the wateriest of winter sunlight. A city of bicycles, with undergraduates (and fellows) flapping about in faded, black gowns; the Martyrs’ Memorial, and fabled inns where the likes of J.R.R Tolkien sat and wrote about a Hobbit who lived in a hole in the ground. Everywhere you turn, you see history staring back at you. And of course there has always been murder!
DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a police officer of many years’ experience, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. She is a long-standing friend of her immediate superior officer, 'Mellow' Mallow and enjoys a rather enigmatic relationship with the steely Superintendent Marcus Donleavy. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.

A lovely French student is dead and it looks like murder. The investigation reveals a secret life but how is that involved. Each apparent motive is found wanting. Enter the music teacher who is hiding something. She proves a worthy opponent to Hillary but still leads to more frustration.
I must have been asleep because i missed the clue that Faith usually leaves in the first couple of chapters. But no worries as this and other hints only provide a general direction. I tried but couldn't make the connection until the end.
So another great book in the Hillary Green series.
A murder that finds them hitting lots of dead ends but all the minor clues lead to the mystery being solved with the help from another team with the station.
Hillary's personal life is still being affected by her dead ex & his criminal sidelines.
Looking forward to book 3.

This second one has way too many gottens (ie more than two) and other errors that I just can't ignore. If you're writing a book set in Britain with British characters, use British English.
I won't be reading any more Hilary books for a while. Hopefully a new Monica or Jenny will appear which I'll read instantly, but til then, I need to read a book that won't bore me and is an actual pleasure to read!
But " Murder at the University " was excellent. Right from the beginning it is full of tension and I really felt almost like one of the team of detectives trying to solve this crime. The coming together of two separate investigations was brilliant and very exciting.
I look forward to reading this author again.
The author has carefully constructed her plot in order to keep the ending a surprise although there are clues to be found if the reader is fully alert!
I'm liking the interactions between the team, even though I'm only on book 2. I anticipate this developing further as the series progresses. I particularly like the downplaying of Hillary's character and the mundanity of her life outside of work. She's really good at her job but not flash, she leaves that to others . . .
I'm looking forward to downloading the next book as soon as this review is posted.
