I really enjoyed the Dumfries and Galloway settings...very well done in a beautiful area of Scotland. I found the character of Fleming to be well developed and her various problems to be realistic.
Whilst having my suspicions about the actual murderer ,I do not judge crime books generally on whether I manage to work out " who dun it " . In this case I did feel that the ending was a little clunky and I did worry about some intended promotions in the force. My biggest gripe was the sheer length of the book ( over 400 pages ) ...I did feel that it would have gained by being shorter ...too much and too many side issues which neither developed many characters nor maintained a strong flow to the story . I have probably read too many GA Detection stories which are generally about 100 pages shorter so this comment may have to be taken with a pinch of salt .

Review
I loved every minute of LYING DEAD and to top it off the answer to the whodunit is staggeringly well-concealed and yet obvious in retrospect, and one I certainly didn't guess., Karen Meek, Eurocrime
A welcome addition to the canon of Scottish crime fiction .. packed with red herrings and believable characters, Press and Journal
'A fascinating cast of possible villains is explored in this skilfully plotted and well-paced novel, each vividly described, entirely believable and never sliding into the usual parodies of country folk. But its real strength is DI Marjory Fleming, both tough and vulnerable as she struggles to track down the killer . . . This book is a delight, from its leisurely start to the moving and unexpected finish. Even better, it's the second in a series, so there's more pleasure to come.', Guardian on THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP
'Not for Templeton gruesome bodies strewn across the landscape left and right, here the emphasis is on character, motive and situation, building into an impressive whole. I'm sure it won't be long before I have to write "the best-selling Aline Templeton". This is seriously good crime writing.', Sue Baker, 'Personal Choice', Publishing News
'In fictional terms the combination of domesticity and detection is very appealing, especially when it comes with a detailed, vivid portrayal of a complete society . . . an interesting, atmospheric and - I predict - televisual series.', Literary Review
An unalloyed pleasure - an intelligent, character-driven crime novel., Andrew Taylor on COLD IN THE EARTH
[Aline Templeton] has demonstrated that, just when we thought Scotland was saturated with detectives, a strong woman can elbow her way in and find a unique niche., Scotsman on COLD IN THE EARTH
'It is always a pleasure to read Aline Templeton, but THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP must surely be her best book to date. Aline's characters are so beautifully drawn . . .', J Wallis Martin
A compelling read., Margaret Yorke on COLD IN THE EARTH
'Loved it', Val McDermid on THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP

This is another very good book in an excellent series. Well written ,3 dimensional characters and an absorbing plot. There are always plenty of people to really dislike as well as ones to cheer on in Ms Templeton's books.

On a Parr with Val M. Great crime writing with an enticing glimpse into the lives of the e community the stories are set around . Well worth reading. One of, no the best crime writer I have come across in some time.

Aline Templeton is steadily getting into her stride with her Galloway detective stories; this one, set in a fictional marina village, takes on a few threads form previous stories. Some of the plotting is still a little over elaborate, cluttered and unconvincing, and I hope the hint of extra marital romance for Big Marge isn't developed, although her husband, like some of her minor characters, seems rather cardboardy. Fortunately nothing happens, mainly because Marge is too busy coping with a staff recruited by someone with a warped sense of humour. Decent undemanding reading.
