I've read the other two Lutheran Ladies Circle books and found them to be easy, entertaining, and somewhat lacking in depth. They were books I read while sunbathing or half watching a movie... I didn't need to pay much attention to keep up with the plot.
Thanks For Leaving, however, kept me riveted in a way I didn't expect. I was completely drawn in to Ola and Rolf's relationship, the trials and struggles of women in WWII, and the hope that the book would last long enough for them to find each other again and live happily ever after, even though I had an idea from reading the first two books that probably wouldn't happen.
Thanks For Leaving was touching, endearing, and occasionally heart-breaking. The writing and the plot were personal, strong, and powerful at times. Not an easy fluff piece, for sure. This book deserves to be savored and appreciated.

Satisfying

Readers, I hope you start with book 1 and then continue through them all. This book left me much more satisfied than most books I read. These books are enjoyable reads but so much more; they are wonderful teaching tools. And they are terrific reminders of God’s unending love, how He meets us wherever we are, and loves us warts and all.

Different from the first two, but wonderful, too

This is third of a series of three Lutheran Ladies Circle books, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone. The main character is a preposterous, outrageous (in a fun way) woman. In this book, she recalls much of her past life as she rides on a train. She tells her story to a younger woman who is also on the train. Part of is are hilarious, and there is also a touching feeling about a sharing of life lessons between generations. I did miss the involvement of the characters from the first two book, and I regret that the author has written only three in this series. The whole series is a wonderful way to spend some time away from every day life while doing quite a bit of laughing. I recommend this book!

Another Amazing Story

The women of the Lutheran Ladies Circle become more and more intriguing. Aunt Ula’s story is the best yet. How she learned, coped, and overcame the challenges of growing up and wise during WW2 delighted and astonished me. This wonderful series should be made into individual movies.

Best of the Bunch

Thanks for Leaving is the third in the Lutheran Ladies series, after Plucking One String, and Through the Knothole. I got to know Aunt Ula, the main character of this book, in the first two books as a sidekick character, but in this book we really get to know her. And love her. I enjoyed the first two books very much, but this one grabbed me by the heart. It may be that because I am also a cranky old woman I identify with Aunt Ula.
The book is well written with just the right amount of humor, right amount of emotion, and right amount of real people doing real things. It is about church ladies in a secular world. I am not a church lady, but I know these women, and I'm so glad I do.
