This book is so, so marvelous! It's mysterious, grue-some, heartbreaking and romantic at the same time. It has a very believable heroine, a sexy hero and a murder-mystery that had me on the edge of my seat!
Avery is - like I said - a very believable heroine. Although significantly ostracised from both her high school and her community, she feels like a girl-next-door who one could easily get to know. Her interactions with people are somewhat limited by her home-schooled background, but to those who she does befriend, she is both giving and understanding. She has a generous heart and I adore her for it. Sheltered by them all her life, Avery doesn't only feel lost in the death of her parents but feels like she's trapped in a sort of limbo, tormented by her lapsing memories.
Avery narrates the book with a voice with genuine grief. The melancholy but collected narration is honest and lyrical. Every word is captivating, every thought filled with emotions.
My heart ached for Avery at many points in the book, but never did the narration make me feel like putting the book down. On the contrary, I read it in record time! I have none but praise for Avery and her lyrical prose.
I also love how the narration matches the gruesomeness of some part of the book while being flexible enough to equal the majesty of its romance. Ben and Avery share a deep, instant connection. Uncontrollable and life-changing, both are each other's salvation. There is a lot of discovery surrounding Ben Dusic, but it's left wide open for the sequel (I am wishing for more) to build on. The romance is sexy and seductive, and there's more than just one. I am hungry for more from these characters!
Low Red Moon has a good transition in the plot, from murder mystery to direct supernatural. Furthermore, the backdrop of the forest, and how most things happen at night gives a very eerie feel and setting. And whenever Avery and Ben gets together, this shifts to become a romantic atmosphere. A perfect fit for the plot!

'Echoes of 'Twilight' - it's not!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2011Verified Purchase
First of all - I went from a one-star rating to a five-star rating for this review!
To begin with; I first discovered this novel whilst browsing book titles containing the word 'moon'. Whilst lots of novels that include 'moon' in their titles are in reality nothing to do with the moon at all, I love all things 'moon', and so sometimes purchase such books anyway. This novel has hardly anything to do with the moon at all, and so from that perspective held very little attraction for me... However; having read the opening lines and a few reviews, I decided to give it a go. The fact that it is aimed at 'young adults' (whatever that category may be?) I have often found that titles from within this group have been very good indeed, and so what could have ultimately put me off, did not.
It also has to be said that this is the most BEAUTIFULLY designed/produced book in visual terms I have EVER bought! Any image you see on the internet will not do it justice... The cover is of a rich raised and metallic red 'foil' that catches the eye and leaps out at you from wherever the book may be lying when not being read with a lovely seductive sheen. Every page has a small red tree design at the bottom - and every time the word 'moon' pops up, it is in red type - along with the first letter at the beginning of each new chapter The print is a great size - not too small - not too big, has lovely short chapters, and is not overlong at just 244 pages. The book is of an extremely high quality. Everything it seemed was going for it! It was indeed an added extra bonus too that I only paid half its cover price for pre-ordering! I like my books to 'look' read when I have finished them - I do not strive to keep them looking brand new whilst carefully turning every page like some, however; I have to confess to having made an exception here, as I handled this like gold! It's simply too gorgeous to spoil... When you receive your copy, you will see what I mean!
First, the downside - which what at times made me want to only award this book a single-star rating:
The theme is not very original. Note that I say 'theme' and not 'story' - it's important that I get that across. Plots involving Werewolves and Vampires is sorely overused these days and all that blood... YUCK! I'm constantly perplexed what anyone (even the young who always like to shock) can possibly find sexy or romantic about Vampires, Werewolves and/or indeed anything involving so much blood...? The blood alone is enough to turn me right off sex for life...
The style of writing is VERY clumsy and awkward from the outset - too many short, abrupt and punctuated sentences - but there's even a greater number of 'unfinished' sentences too, and even incomplete words... It almost ends up as a 'stutter rap'! It stops and starts like a car with a bad engine! When it does run smoothly, some sentences are repeated right next to each other. All this I found infuriating at first until I got used to it, but as I got into it, it became more like a 'style' of writing more than an 'annoyance', which changed my opinion somewhat. But be warned; this novel does not flow well - certainly nothing like water, and you will probably find yourself re-reading the same paragraph several times in order to get to grips with the meaning of it! It wasn't until around Chapter 11 I felt, that the story really 'kicked in' and became really good for the first time. Chapter 11 was beautifully written in stark contrast to the prior ten; touchingly sad and with a sentiment that anyone could relate to that has lost somebody close to them - particularly their parents.
Several references to 'Ben's' footwear which are moccasins, implies that the author may have a fetish for these types of shoes - but apart from this over reference to the footwear, there is little description of the boy for the girls to enjoy other than he is 'beautiful' (which is not a word I often use to describe the male sex myself) - indeed none of the characters are described in any great detail at all, and so an awful lot of 'visual' is left to the imagination. The whole story is 'simply' written - having the need for very little research. Add this to the simple dialogue and lack of descriptions, and what you have is a very easily written story in my opinion. However; having said all that, here's the upside from my point of view:
Throughout, I was 'curious'. I had no idea at how it would end or where it was leading, which is always a great way of keeping someone 'hooked', and even the best reads sometimes give this game away pretty early on, but this does keep you guessing at the outcome until the last handful of pages, and in view of the negatives that is some pretty mean feat! There's little enough to make you warm to any of the characters (few as there are - and is mainly due to their lack of description) but once again; it's so simply written, I don't think it matters that much, which is a bit ironic. I wasn't disappointed with the ending, but have some feeling it is a little corny, but because of it, again ironically, it does hit you pretty unexpectedly!
All in all; a book a young person might carry in their handbag or back pack if you're a boy, and would perhaps read as and when the mood takes you, or whilst 'on the move'. I had mine by the side of my bed, and as I hate going to bed and always need a book to encourage me, I found myself reciting to myself: 'Low Red Moon' as bedtime approached in the early hours which is the time I go. 'Low Red Moon' - sort of rolls off the tongue nicely.
In summing up; I gave this book five stars for having a 'unique' style all its own. I liked it and finished it - I want to keep it, and for some reason won't forget it, and so that can't be a bad recommendation!

A werewolf story to keep you on the edge of your seat
Reviewed in the United States on 9 October 2010Verified Purchase
Avery, has experienced a horrible event actually witnessing her parents murder. The only problem she can't remember anything but being taken away.
After being hospitalized and having to live we her astranged paternal grandmother she tries to function again and always, always tries to remember.
Then one days she sees him and she's hooked. Ben is new to school too; and the only word to describe him is beautiful. he has lost his family too but that isn't why she is inexplicably drawn to him and as much as he fights it he to her.
As the story unfolds the who did it may seem confusing until more people die; then it all becomes a flurry of activity. Avery no longer knows who to trust; the one she's beginning to love doesn't remember that night either could it be?...
Ivy Devlin knows how to create a cliff hanger ending. I can only hope there is more.

I have a weakness for books about shifters and werewolfs. By far out of all that I have read, this one is my favorite. It is mysterious, romantic and all around good story.
