Product Description

Anne Hathaway is a headstrong 26 year-old woman.

But when she meets a man eight years her junior her life changes dramatically.

Will Shakespeare is no ordinary Stratford lad.

His head is full of poetry, and big dreams of success on the London stage.

But after a whirlwind romance, Anne falls pregnant and Will finds himself tied down to a life he doesn't want.

Desperate to fulfil his dreams he eventually saves enough to move to London.

Pining for her love and bored of her provincial life, Anne follows him to the bustling city.

But the city of vice soon threatens the life they have built together.

And Anne finds herself caught up in a drama as intense as any that Will is penning for the theatre.

'Love's Will' is a brilliantly-researched romantic comedy that brings England's greatest playwright vividly to life. It combines historical detail with a moving story to create a book that is both informative and entertaining.

'Beautiful, witty, insightful.' - Richard Foreman, best-selling author of 'A Hero Of Our Time.'

'An exciting and absorbing tale'- Brian Kavanagh,best-selling author of the Belinda Lawrence Mysteries.

History tells us little about the relationship between William Shakespeare and his wife Anne, leaving ample room for novelists to invent plausible and thought-provoking stories about them. Meredith Whitford does this admirably in Love’s Will.

The author provides quite a deal of historical information in the end-notes of this book which helps to put her novel into context. It is best to read these notes after the fictional narrative, which does not go out of its way to give facts and references. I believe this is the way to read and write historical fiction—the primary focus on living the tale and learning about the history as a secondary thing. Meredith Whitford enables us to do this by excellent word-craft, narrating with just enough fact subtly inserted to immerse the reader in the setting.

Her brilliant dialogue brings the characters to life. It is liberally garnished with puns and other witty, playful speech of the sort for which Shakespeare’s plays are renowned. In a most entertaining way, both dialogue and narration are strewn with his published phrases and allusions to his published texts.

Shakespeare himself is portrayed not merely as an extraordinary master of written language, but also as a man conflicted, torn. On one hand he is driven by his genuine love for Anne and their children; on the other an overpowering bisexuality pulls him away from her. It is a mark of a great writer that the reader empathises with both him and the highly intelligent, understanding yet courageous and loving Anne.

The novel prompts questions about the nature of masculinity and femininity, and about today’s viewpoint of gender relationships. I found myself alternately aching and cheering for both Will and Anne as the tale proceeded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant. Honest. Evocative. 18 November 2015

Add those to ‘powerful’ and the description fits. The little that we really know (and can document) about William Shakespeare’s life provides the anchor points for this novel that centers on the relationship between Anne Hathaway and Will Shakspere, encapsulating their first encounters, their affair, their marriage, the birth of their children, their sacrifices, Will’s slowly burgeoning career, the trials besetting a long-distance marriage, all wrapped up in the context of the turmoil – religious and political – of the last twenty or so years of the reign of Elizabeth I. Whitford so skillfully winds into her tapestry lines from the plays and poetry that we are provided with skillful portraits, as well, of the persons inspiring the great writer’s most poignant poems, honest characters, and evocative scenes from his plays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and Well Researched 11 May 2013

Whitford has written an intriguing and well researched historical fiction novel about one of the most fascinating people in English history. Since we know so very little about Shakespeare, this book nicely fills in many of unknowns with a well written story line that might have been. I enjoyed it immensely and was intrigued enough about the man to immediately follow it up with Bill Bryson's fast-paced, witty "biography" entitled Shakespeare The World as Stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars What might have been.... 30 April 2013

Very interesting take on how it might have been. There is very little known about William Shakespeare's life. Meredith Whitford tells a very believable story and gets your imagination going. Ms Whitford style of writing puts you into the story. TREASON another of her books is excellent if you enjoy historical fiction.
5.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare, the man 1 November 2015

An intimate glance at William Shakespeare's life and times including his marriage to Anne Hathaway and the birth of his children. Will becomes human to us and it's easy to forgive him his frailties. The writing is skillful and kept my interest throughout the book. The description of life in the world of a beginning playwright in the 16th century was difficult but very colourful! I loved the book and would recommend it highly.
