Mabel Krause is desperate to get her brother freed from being jailed for a crime he didn’t commit, but the situation gets bleaker all the time, and she can’t afford a lawyer. A friend tells her of a law student that might take the case without charging, but he refuses, and she doesn’t know where to turn next.
Hiram Cummings needs money for law school and takes a job working as a legal clerk. He would like to help the young lady, but he can’t afford to, especially with his boss telling him not to get involved. When he finally succumbs to her persistence, startling facts are revealed, and danger builds, including dangers of the heart. But the most important lesson Hiram has learned came from the faith his family has taught him – always do the right thing, even when the costs are high.
I found Mabel and Hiram unappealing names for the heroes in a story, but I loved the novel until I got to the ending. It ended so suddenly, it felt incomplete, and I wasn’t happy with all the details. A happy-ever-after should include more than sacrificing heart-felt desires and giving up dreams. I know this may be part of real-life sometimes, but I want more in the books I read for entertainment.
