H.P.ラヴクラフトとその友人D.ワンドレイの間で1926年から1937年にかけて交わされた書簡を纏めたもの。きっちりテーマを絞って集めたとの紹介文を読んでラヴクラフトの思想的側面に照明が当てられるかと期待していたのだが、そうでもなかったのでややガッカリ。書かれた内容は、お互いの作品や古今の怪奇小説についての忌憚のない感想や批評、情報交換、或いは出版事情や旅行記録、交流記録等を含む様々な近況報告と、結構多岐に亘る。文章にはHPL特有のおふざけが満載で、読み物として楽しめるかどうかは若干微妙なところだが、資料としての価値は高いだろう。アーカム版の書簡集を補完すると云う意味でも、新しいスタンダードになりそうな予感がする。
390頁分ある各書簡には一通毎に結構な量の注が挿まれており、この点、ややリズムが悪い。この他編者による解説、人名解説、文献一覧、索引が載せられている。
