4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but simply written for YA 11 November 2014

A few years ago I read a Jennifer Hudson Taylor book and enjoyed it. I enjoyed this one as well, however, it's not particularly written for a mature thinking mind. That sounds bad, and I don't mean it to be. YA, or junior books are not bad, just not written with wording that adults may enjoy sinking their teeth into. For Love or Loyalty may not have been intended for YA or Junior audiences, but the style fits those age brackets more than true adult level. This is why I gave it a 4 instead of 3. Enjoyable, but not really a wow factor, writing-wise Not bad, just not to my appreciation level.
Loved the story! Loved the history, although some of it may not have been quite accurate, especially with regard to the medical knowledge of that era, but that's okay. I don't usually downgrade a book if it's not completely accurate. A junior reader would learn a lot from the history this book, and that's a positive. Indentured servitude, being sold, plantation work, abuse of people under servitude, vendettas and family feuds, among the many topics were handled well. Trust in God was handled well. When something bad happens in your life, think of it as an opportunity that He uses for your good and the good of others in the long run. It was a lesson many learned and brought joy to those who learned it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great reminder of the Old World to New World struggles of our ancestors! 10 June 2014

After reading one of the author's earlier books, I determined that she was a very promising writer and looked forward to watching her writing talents grow. Taylor did not disappoint in the least. One of her latest offerings, For Love or Loyalty was skillfully written and proved to be a very entertaining tale of the fate of those who came to the Americas as indentured servants. I especially enjoyed the Old World to New World aspect, and it was nice to see Lauren and Malcolm each grow in their faith and offer encouragement in times of the other's weakness and doubt. Since this was the first in a series, there is definitely something to look forward to in my reading future!
5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it 4 September 2016

A highly enjoyable adventure! A bit fish out of water and a bit Romeo and Juliet, this novel kept my attention from start to finish. Not a book to start at bedtime if you want to actually sleep. You won't want to put it down. My only nit pick is that for much of the book the heroine seemed virtually perfect in every way. Toward the end she does show a tiny flaw...maybe? But really the rest of the book was so enjoyable the heroine's lack of flaws barely bothered me. I very much look forward to the next book in the series.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Faith,Inspiring book-filled with hope,romance and danger!! 10 October 2014

This book is so full of faith. The main character went through so many trials...kidnapped...on ship with people traveling to be indentured servants..and you can't forget about love! I hadn't realized the horrid ship conditions that people went through during that time...death,illness,starvation and could go on. Once when they reached the new colonies-Malcolm, the man who had kidnapped Lauren, because her father had taken his mother and sister to the colonies to sell them. Yet,in spite of all the feuding between these Scots..the Lord prevailed. Sometimes we have to go through tough times. We don't know why the Lord permits bad things to happen to good,Godly people-but,we know that He uses it for good,at some time. I highly recommend this book...looking forward to reading the second and third..and she has a new one coming out!

4.0 out of 5 stars a good read 13 September 2014

This book begins in Scotland, one of my favorite places, but quickly shifts to a journey to the New World. This book deals with the difficult days of many indentured servants who arrived in America. Throughout the book, Christians are seen attempting to live the life that Christ wants. At times, the plot seems a bit rushed. As with many Christian novels, the ending was rather predictable, but it was an easy, good read.
