Entertaining Regency Romp
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2008Verified Purchase
Felicity Langley has always dreamed of marrying a duke - and now she's managed to get herself very nearly betrothed to the very respectable, very lofty Duke of Hollindrake. But first she has to meet him. What Felicity doesn't realise is that she has actually met the man she intends to marry - he's the altogether too handsome, too virile and too rakish man that she has just mistaken for her new footman.
Thatcher was never meant to inherit the dukedom and the first thing he intends after returning from the continent is to tell this presumptuous, title-hungry young chit that he has absolutely no intention of honouring this supposed betrothal. But he's quickly charmed by her determination, passion and spirit.
She would marry him in a heartbeat should he tell her of his true identity but Thatcher wants to know whether she would marry him without the title. So he begins his ruse, determined to show this unconventional woman that life as a duchess can't compare with a life of passion and love.
This book is technically the third book in Elizabeth Boyle's Bachelor Chronicles series (after This Rake of Mine and Something About Emmaline ) but characters from numerous other of the author's books also appear. Despite this, the book stands entirely alone so even if you haven't read any other books by Elizabeth Boyle, then this book will still make sense!
The story of deception isn't particularly new but it's a plot that I very much enjoy and it was written well enough to be fresh, exciting and interesting. You want to keep reading to find out what's going to happen and the plot is constantly entertaining and amusing.
It took me a while to get to like Felicity but this actually worked well as it helped you understand Thatcher's own feelings towards her as he too discovered her true character. She's feisty, determined and makes you want to root for her. Thatcher was a strapping, delightful hero despite the fact that he never once truly behaved like a footman - especially around Felicity! The book isn't particularly sensual but the pair had some sweet chemistry and good banter throughout.
While also setting up the next two books in the series, this book is, itself, a fine, well-written and entertaining Regency romp. If you're looking for something fun to take your mind off things for a while then you can't go wrong with this one. 4 stars.

funny

This is the sequel to the (somewhat boring) This Rake if Mine, which was the sequel to the absolutely fantastic Something about Emmaline (read it !!).
Emmaline and Love Letters are witty and charming. This Rake lacks the wit. Unfortunately, you have to read This Rake also, because the author is frequently referring to it in Love Letters (how I wish authors would not do that !!).

Anachronistisch, aberwitzig, übertrieben und lesenswert
Reviewed in Germany on 25 March 2009Verified Purchase

Absolutely wonderful

I'm a huge fan and of all her books this is my absolute favorite. I have a huge crush on Thatcher 😁💕 and i love how the story never has a boring part, it just flows smoothly, all its ups and downs and lefts and rights blend beautifully to make a fantastic romance.

When love wins
Reviewed in the United States on 4 April 2019Verified Purchase
In fact I had the following book CONFESSIONS OF A LITTLE BLACK GOWN stored in my kindle but when I checked Goodreads reviews, I discovered it was a kind of two parts story, one for each twin sisters and the book I had was the second.
So I purchased this one.
Everything was rather utterly unbelievable but Mrs Boyle crafted it in such a way, that it become so wonderfully enjoyable that I had nothing to do if it was a bit far-fetched.
I laughed, smiled and swooned.
Felicity and Thatcher are heroes as I love them, they are able to see their errors but aim to right them even if they are rather hot-tempered people acting sometimes on impulse and came to regret it.
I first I wondered why Felicity was so inclined to marry her duke, someone she never met. She might be in dire need of funds but why this duke.
Then slowly her true nature was revealed, she has a heart bigger than herself and even if she has some hope to have a nice marriage with her duke, she aims to protect those she thinks under her care, and nothing is better than to be under a duke’s protection.
She just never expected to fall for her new footman, a man who turns her view of love upside down.
Thatcher or Lord Sterling or the new Duke Of Hollindrake does agree to find himself betrothed to an unknown chit when he just comes back home in his new tittle.
Not he expected to be entranced by said chit and so much he entered her game of winning her duke’s heart but in making her fall for him as Thatcher, the new hired footman and not Hollinbrake the duke.
Then began Thatcher unconventional wooing, trying to show her she must not choose wealth over love, that she must let go of her prim and proper facade to enjoy life at the fullest, and it can’t be without him.
I loved their struggles, him needing to be certain she would choose him for himself and not his dukedom and her fighting her attraction for him because she thought she was doing the right thing for her family.
A wonderful and humorous historical romantic comedy.
