Private security entrepreneur Jeb McCormick is in over his head with his latest client. Not only is the painfully shy woman he’s meant to be protecting a total knock-out, she’s also his former Army buddy’s sister. Helping her find the reason why anyone would ransack her house is demanding enough, but keeping his hands off her is proving to be the real challenge.

Carolina Walker wants a quiet life, thank you very much. She left intrigue and deception behind in Washington D.C., never expecting it to follow her home to Bowling Green, Kentucky. When events happen that can’t be explained away, help arrives in the form of the very attractive and muscular Jebediah McCormick. But as the tension escalates between Jeb and Carolina, so does the danger facing them...

4.0 out of 5 stars Can Jeb Find Carolina's Stalker in time? 13 December 2016
By TJOly - Published on Amazon.com

**I received a copy of Lost in Shadows from Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review**

Lost in Shadows by Anita DeVito is the second book in the Lost series. I read it as a standalone and was still able to follow along easily with the ongoing story. I would give the book a solid 4.3 stars out of 5 stars.

Jeb McCormick has just started a new job with his security company when he takes a call from his former Army buddy, Nick, who wants him to help with of his sister Carolina who has a stalker and had her house broken into while they were on Skype. He agrees and soon is at Carolina's house looking down the barrel of her granddaddy's .44. He soon realizes that it will be very hard to keep his hands off her. They are soon embroiled in trying to find out why someone broke it and wanted something specific, but what is it? It will take Jeb's whole family and his co-workers to keep Carolina safe while trying to find out who is after her.

Carolina Walker is a Pulitzer prize winning journalist who since the death of her mother is working as a research assistant for several authors but when someone breaks into her house and car then tries to snatch her purse, she wonders if something she has researched is more valuable than anyone knows. When Jeb shows up and says that her brother has sent her, she upset but soon realizes that he maybe able to find what they want because her sheriff uncle so far is reluctant to believe anything is wrong. They soon have to run to the McCormick compound for safety where slowly Carolina realizes that she's falling hard for Jeb. There is a moment in Nashville where she uses a hose to cool down some of Butch McCormick's avid fans that is worth a good giggle especially when she finds out that he can turn anything into a song. There is a political side story that will turn out to have the entire story finally making sense of everything.

Great story and hopefully the next book and I look forward
5.0 out of 5 stars Tangled web of love, shady dealings and interfering family! 1 January 2017

Carolina Walker has lost her mother, is separated from her brother whilst he serves overseas, has an overbearing uncle, who also happens to be the sheriff, ad now she seems to have acquired a stalker! How the heck can this pretty much housebound woman have got a stalker! But when her home is broken into whilst talking with her brother via Skype, he sends in the Cavalry. Who just happens to be in the shape of his buddy, ex soldier/sheriff and newly minted security company owner, Jeb.

Jeb would do anything for a friend, including leaving his brothers wedding reception to race to the aid of a lone female. But when he arrives he meets the business end of rifle. Caroline may be terrified but she will go down fighting. After their misunderstanding is resolved, she grudgingly allows Jen to help. But with her family thinking she's seeing things and no real reason apparent as to why she is being targeted, Jeb decides to stick around and see what he can uncover.

I loved this story of two damaged souls finding solace in the other. Jeb's issues may not be apparent but they are just as real and tangible as Carolinas outward show of fear. Whilst there didn't appear to be one big trauma that made her isolate herself, you could see how the accumulation of little things made her doubt herself and others. I enjoyed unravelling all the strings between the characters and meeting the unsinkable Emmaline along the way!

I'm hoping that Nate gets a book of his own as that man has more to say I'm sure. I really want to learn more about the others in Jeb's team too...there has so be a story behind the Casanova! You will find yourself sniggering at Carolina and Katie's treatment of a certain someone in the barn!!! Whilst there were characters you could easily hate for nothing more than the way their politics/beliefs grate against your own (see Millstone!) I found I still had a little love for some.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
4.0 out of 5 stars Come away with me... 20 December 2016

**3.5 Stars**

Carolina, a former investigative journalist, quit her job to care for her mother after she was diagnosed with cancer. After her Mom's passing she switched her focus to research and editing, working with numerous clients. While solving puzzles had always fascinated her, she now prefers to do it quietly from the background. As she's Skyping with her brother, Nate, she's shocked when a van pulls in her driveway and masked men jump out. Nate, having seen a lot with his time in the Army, immediately knows Carolina needs to hide. When she does as Nate asks, she overhears the intruders searching for something, though she has no idea what, but they ransack her house as they look for it.

Jeb has recently resigned as sheriff and is now co-owner of a security firm. He's attending his brother, Butch's, wedding when he receives a coded message, and knowing only a select few have that information, immediately recognizes the urgency of it. When Nate, an old Army buddy, explains the situation with his sister, Jeb is quick to agree to watch over Carolina and investigate what the men could've been referring to.

After Jeb convinces Carolina that Nate did in fact send him to help her, they start straightening her house and talk about the invasion, and her earlier claims of unexplainable instances. Though those instances were written off by everyone as her imagination or stress, Jeb believes her. It doesn't take long for Jeb and Carolina to form an easy friendship of sorts, but the attraction was immediate and intense.

Are the other incidents related to the break in? Or is Carolina in danger from more than one person? Can Jeb balance his bodyguard duties with his feelings for Carolina? Or will he push her away, believing he's not worthy of her love? Will Jeb ever find peace with certain actions of his past? Will Carolina decide there's only one way to protect those important to her? Can Jeb keep Carolina safe? Will they uncover who is behind the attempts on Carolina? Is there a HEA for these two?

One-click now and follow along as two people, both struggling with their own demons, find a healing love that's worth fighting for. Please keep in mind this is book two in the series, though I feel it can easily be read as a standalone.

On a purely personal note, and without giving away too much information, I will say there were certain situations regarding Jeb's brother, Butch (book one hero), that I really could've done without due to his marital status, though each one was a result of his fame. I just felt they were unnecessary for not only this story, but overall as a whole.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who's Stalking Carolina? 16 December 2016
By SD - Published on Amazon.com
Carolina Walker left her job in Washington, DC to do freelance investigative work back in her hometown in Kentucky. But strange things are happening and she’s pretty sure she has a stalker. Her uncle, the sheriff, doesn’t believe her nor does her brother, Nate. Then her home is broken into and her life is in danger.

Nate is serving overseas and can’t help Carolina so he sends one of his old Army buddies, Jeb McCormick, who now runs a professional security service. Jeb believes Carolina’s stories of being stalked and all of the strange things that have happened. Now he just needs to keep her alive, which is harder than it should be because he’s pretty sure he’s fallen in love with her and that means he is no good at doing his job.

I was swept up in the suspense of the first half of the book. Who’s after Carolina and why? Unfortunately I felt my interest begin to wane during the second part and I think it’s because the mystery was solved too soon, which meant that the latter part was waiting for the bad guys to attack. While the attack sequence was quite good, the last bit of it was recounted by the characters so the reader lost the immediacy.

I liked the characters of Carolina and Jeb initially. I also very much liked the fact that the “love at first sight” scenario, which I sometimes cynically pooh-pooh, was given credence by a research article. Ha! Unfortunately, I began to grow weary of Carolina and Jeb’s pushing each other away and being overly sensitive. Between their “selfless” conflict and the solving of the mystery, the ending dragged.

The supporting characters of Jeb’s brother, Butch, a country music performer, his new wife, Katie, a smartass architect, and her geeky cousin, Tom, added a great deal to Lost in Shadows and made me want to read the first novel in the series, Lost in Tennessee, because that was Butch and Katie’s story and I just found them to be funny, compelling characters.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
