Product Description

Just when you think you're lost, you might end up falling in love.

Sam Farouk is having a bad year. Things have gone down the drain ever since she found her boyfriend cheating on her at the Golden Globes. An unfortunate turn of events forces her to trade sunny Los Angeles with the rainy, chilly highlands of Scotland. She has the chance to work as one of the makeup artists on a new TV series based on a fantasy saga everyone is bananas about, but she can’t help feeling lost and a little bit homesick. Until she starts falling for Hugh MacLeod, the actor set to impersonate the titular role of Abarath, dragon slayer and part-time Casanova.
Hugh MacLeod is ready for his big break. After more than a decade taking every possible acting job just to stay afloat, he can finally show his range in a series to be proud of. Hugh’s commitment to his career comes before anything else, and that’s part of the reason why he hasn’t had a serious relationship in a while. But the more he’s around Sam, the more he knows he’s in deep, deep trouble. How is he supposed to not fall for the sexy, mysterious brunette who works all over him every single day? Every touch, every look is torture.
Getting lost in each other might be wrong, but it could end up being just what they need.

Lost in Scotland is the superb new release from Hilaria Alexander. It is a contemporary romance that sweeps from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the stunning, picturesque setting of Scotland.
Samhain Farouk (Sam) lives and works in Los Angeles. Having parents who worked in the industry for decades, Sam and her siblings grew up loving everything about the movie industry, and Sam finally chose to work behind the camera as a makeup artist. She absolutely loves everything Hollywood. But Sam has had a horrendous year- her life as she knew it was turned upside down when she caught her boyfriend of seven years cheating on her at the Golden Globe Awards. Their breakup was much akin to a dramatic movie script and Sam is still suffering the effects of the fallout.
She gets the opportunity to work on a highly anticipated new television series being filmed in Scotland, so Sam takes the chance to get away and have a fresh start. Her goal is to lay low for a while. She definitely isn’t interested in a relationship; love only leads to drama. She has never been so far away from home and family before; she is way out of her comfort zone and feeling a little lost.
Hugh McLeod has been honing his acting skills for over ten years now and has worked incredibly hard to get an opportunity to really showcase his talents and get his big break. All his dreams come true when he is offered the lead role on the new series being shot right there in his homeland. He can’t believe his luck, but is a little worried that it may get snatched away at any moment. There will be no dating or beginning any relationship as he is there to do a job, he can’t afford to get distracted and needs to focus on delivering a great performance each and every time.

When I first saw this book I thought “nah not going to like it” because I’ll be truthful I’m a book cover snob. You think I would have learnt by now not to judge a book by its cover because Hiliara Alexander blew me away with this book!
Sam Farouk is betrayed by two of the people close to her. Her year is going rap and she can’t get a job in LA. She wants to start fresh so she gets a job as a makeup artist on the set of a new TV series and moves to Scotland. She feels lost and lonely, she misses her family and friends that is until she meet the lead actor in the TV series, Hugh. Hugh is hot but his career is about to take off and he doesn’t have time for a relationship but he can’t seem to stay away from Sam, but Sam has a secret and when Hugh finds out will he still want to be around her?
This is the first book I have read by Hilaria and I can honestly say that if she has others like this I will definitely be reading them. It took me a couple of days after reading this book to write this review because I didn’t know where to start, I had all these feelings running through my mind but mostly I just loved this story. I loved that the way it is written I felt like I was in Scotland when Sam was describing where she was. It has it all, betrayal, love, friendship, it made me laugh, cry and just truly feel it in my heart. The chemistry between Sam and Hugh really kept me reading and turning the pages quickly, I totally loved it! I definitely recommend reading this book you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it, be inspired to visit Scotland. 10 February 2017

I always love reading Alexander's work, as I feel her characters are more reality based than traditional romance characters. Lost in Scotland is no exception, and I especially enjoyed how Sam's family was of a more diverse background. I don't want to give that section away, and it's not a major story point, but it's an important part of representations in literature, if that makes any sense.

I also really loved how it was Outlander inspired, without being Outlander fanfiction! I feel like that's hard to do: it's set in Scotland, it has a Scot as a swoon-worthy male lead, and it's on a TV production, but Alexander takes it in a different direction. It feels like one of those stories where you see a minor character in the original story, find them fascinating, and follow them on their "What If" path. Like what Alexander did with her novels This Love and Not About Love, actually. This Love followed Ella and Lou, and introduced us to Ally and Boyd, and we followed their journey in Not About Love.

Lost in Scotland also renewed my desire to get a passport and go explore Scotland!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely LOVED this book!!! I NEED a vacation to Scotland ASAP! 2 February 2017

I absolutely ADORED this novel! Lost in Scotland was such a breath of fresh air for the Hollywood romance trope. Hilaria had me hooked from the Prologue. I was totally invested and couldn’t wait to see what journey our heroine went on.

“You’ve made the right choice, Sam. Scotland is the perfect place to start over.”

I instantly fell in love with Sam and Hugh. Sam grew up in the movie industry—she loved everything about it until she was the center of attention. She travels to Scotland to leave her past behind, and works on reinventing herself on the set of an upcoming TV series. Sam was such a strong heroine—she not only went through so much publicly, but also moved to the other side of the world away from all her family and friends. During her first day in Scotland, she meets a handsome, mysterious hiker. She also has no clue that he’s the star of the show she’ll be working on. Hugh, he’s sweet, kindhearted, and totally swoon-worthy. And probably the most down-to-earth celebrity ever. Oh, and he’s Scottish. With an accent. Their chemistry was off the charts, and I loved them together.

“She laughed, and I loved the sound of it. It made me feel lighter, in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. Suddenly, I felt like I wanted to be the one to make her laugh, the one to make her happy.”

Hilaria does a fantastic job at bringing the imagery of Scotland’s countryside to life in this novel. And now a trip to Scotland is needed in my future! Lost in Scotland was a beautiful story set in a gorgeous country, filled with a little angst, steam, sweet moments, and diverse characters. I absolutely loved witnessing this journey of strangers becoming friends, and eventually growing into an A-list power couple!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great escape to Scotland! 21 April 2017

★¸¸.•*¨*•★Minor spoilers alert★•*¨*•.¸¸★

Writing style: Dual POVs
Cover and chapter design: I like the cool couple image hidden in the Scotland hills. And the sky-blue chapter titles add a nice bit of color inside the novel.

Favorite Sam Quote:
‘I loved him, and he needed to know how much. He was everything.’

Favorite Hugh Quote:
‘The air of mystery about her was one of the things that attracted me the most, and her soft voice was another, but the way her eyes seemed to look right through me was what was most unsettling.

On top of that, when she smiled at me, I felt powerless. I didn’t have a chance against her. I had to give in. I wanted to fall for her, follow her anywhere.’

Did this one live up to its synopsis well? Yes, 100% yes!
Although the celebrity romance trope isn’t a big draw for me normally, I’m a huge fan of author Hilaria Alexander. I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed by my escape into Sam and Hugh’s love story. I loved all the references to the Outlander television show and the comparisons between real life lead actor Sam Heughan and fictional lead actor Hugh MacLeod. The dilemma Hugh has once he falls for Hollywood make-up artist Samhain (aka Sam) Farouk and how it no doubt paralleled what the Outlander lead actors are currently experiencing was eye-opening and interesting. I’m a total shipper, and I have no shame in admitting I want Outlander lead actors Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe to be a real life off screen couple, ha!

Fortunately, the evolution and resolution of fictional Hugh and Sam’s professional and romantic relationship seemed very realistic and had me smiling in delight. I also loved how the novel took place over a year plus. There was also lots of good humor, steam, pathos and conflict that never seemed absurd or over the top. I hope this one gets an audiobook eventually so I can indulge in an easy future re-read. I can imagine narrators Zachary Morgan and Edita Brychta performing this one perfectly – hint, hint. 😉

5.0 out of 5 stars Take Me Away! 27 June 2017

Swoon, swoon, Scottish swoon! I love Hollywood, movies, t.v, you get the idea! So I'm drawn anytime a book has a setting in the entertainment industry. As the synopsis says, Sam is a make-up artist that after a bad break up ends up in Scotland. One thing I loved about the book is the diversity Hilaria has written about, her characters are a melting pot and her way to describe the places she takes you too makes you want to book a plane ticket! She pulls you into the story right away although I didn't feel like it was rushed.

Sam and Hugh's chemistry is instant but I love the way that it isn't rushed, their story isn't one of meeting and falling in love the next day. They are friends first and I liked that about the story. If you are dreaming about far off places then Lost in Scotland is your next read! 5 out 5 roses!

After ending a relationship with her cheating boyfriend and the consequences that follow, Sam take a job on a television show as a makeup artist filming in Scotland. She sees this as a fresh start. Hugh thinks this show might be his big break. He isn't looking for a relationship.

This is a sweet story that is based in Scotland. You get a little mini vacation from real life and get to visit Scotland. It was interesting to kind of see life behind the scenes of a television show. It's a fun lighthearted read.
