12 stories, generally about 20 pages each. Most of them are well to very well written. Most of them take place in Bretonnia. Most are are stories with undead, that have an old movies or old novels ghost stories feeling. The characters are "ordinary" people in the warhammer world, no kings and gods. 4 stars. Generally not for kids. Details follow:
.
Son and Hair , by Ian Winterton. 5 stars.
Main characters are a Bretonnian lord, his sister, his son, a grail knight and a dark wizard. Some fighting against beastmen. The story is presented as a series of short scenes, very intense and very well written. Its a very dark and great story, recommended for dark fantasy fans and anybody that likes dark stories. Again a great story, kind of Grimm brothers dark story.
.
Who Mourns a Necromancer ? by Brian Craig. Almost 5 stars.
Two people mourn him, a scholar and a young noble who tells the scholar a story. Very well written and very dark, one of these stories that you can not tell the difference between good and evil in the warhammer world. This one is also recommended for dark stories fans.
.
Faith, by Robert Earl. 4 stars.
A knight visits a village where somebody or something is killing people. Well written, suspenseful, i also liked the ending.
.
A Choice of Hatreds, by Clint Werner. Almost 4 stars.
Takes place in the Empire. Main character is the witch hunter Mathias Thulmann who fights against daemons and people who want to get revenge.
.
Tybalt's Quest, by Gav Thorpe. 4 stars.
A knight fights against many undead creatures. I liked the descriptive writing a lot and the story is ok.
.
The Judas Goat, by Robert Earl. 3 and a half stars.
A group of Empire army recruits marches in the country, and some of them disappear. No reason to be included in this collection.
.
The Sound which Wakes You, by Ben Chessell. 4 stars.
Bretonnian villagers rising against their lord. Well written, some small but nice surprises at the ending. No supernatural entities or events.
.
Portrait of My Undying lady, by Gordon Rennie. Almost 5 stars.
The main character is a painter in some Tilean city, and of course the undying lady. No fighting. Its a simple story, very well written. Recommended also for artist and painters.
.
The Plague Pit, by Jonathan Green. 3 and a half stars.
A group of Kislevite mercenaries (Badenov's band) fights against plague daemons in a swamp in the northern part of the Empire (Ostland i think). Very descriptive writing, lots of fighting, ok story, but it shouldn't be in this collection.
.
Ancestral Honour, by Gav Thorp. 3 and a half stars.
A dishonored dwarf wants to be a slayer and travels to a lost dwarf hold. Its a good story, well written, the dwarfs and their life are well depicted i think, but i dint't like much the ending.
.
A Gentlemans War, by Neil Rutledge. 2 stars.
The title should've been "A Doofus's War". An Empire army prepares to fight against Bretonnians at the border. The main character in the most annoying/irritating/idiot character i've ever seen in a book. He is the son on an Empire army general that serves in the army. He likes the shiny Bretonnians and hates the filthy empire troops and army. Its about 30 pages long and at page 7 before the end, after i read some more of the heros idiotic wonderings and thoughts (they are plenty and are presented very frequently in the story), very calmly i decided to quit reading this. 2 stars because besides the doofus main character everything else makes sense.
.
The Ultimate Ritual, by Neil Jones & Wiliam king. 4 stars. This is the last story in the book.
Two Empire wizards perform a dark ritual. A good story, its well written but too short, just 10 pages. Read it also if you want to catch a glimpse of the lands of the Empire and the Chaos wastes.
Very recommended to WH fans because:
